Hi mannyo,
I am thinking along the same lines, everything working OK so all will be left for the nicer weather. On the way back from the Xmas meet the offside dipped headlight bulb went south, so tomorrow I will try to replace all four headlight bulbs, but via the top. Blow taking both front wheels off!!!

Hi all,
First time poster here (thanks Ian!). Does anyone have the wifi version of VCDS? I'm thinking of ordering it during my trip to the States next week. I'm looking to buy an A8/S8, so the fact that it works with a mobile is a real plus point for me - I can use it to check faults on any of the cars I go to see. The unlimited version is a little pricey though, hence the question. |

The thing is Tony, the wifi version is really cool, although original cable is long enough to feed it through the window and have the laptop connected even in the engine bay. If you will be constantly diagnostic new cars for years to come then unlimited ver is the way to go if you REALLY need the wifi. Mobile feature is cool, no doubt, but like few guys in here, I have a dedicated Lenovo table which always sits in the glove box and is fairly compact and I personally prefer laptop/tablet.
Here is the tablet/laptop http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8797

VCDS is the VERY FIRST tool you should buy if you have an '8.
What version exactly will depend on the car and your preferences.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.). 2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one! Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later) 1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850! |

Well, I bit the bullet and purchased the Hex-Net VCDS (unlimited).
...Now I just need a car to go with it! |

Hi Tony,
Enjoy your VCDS I am still on a steep learning course, every day I think of something else to try, just wish I had the time to plug in and play with it There is a HUMONGOUS amount of knowledge and willing assistance on this forum. Honestly this is the best forum that I have taken part in. Only one I use on a permanent basis, actually at least twice a day. But then at 75 years young I enjoy the banter and miss the Army comradeship of my earlier decades.

But as for your purchase, its the best thing to own. Vcds to an 8 is like a hammer to a nail, useless on their own but together Good luck on the car hunt.

Well, I can't find anything from the VAG group to plug it into, but I read the codes on my sister's Fiesta (my car is too old to have an OBDII port) and it works fine in infrastructure mode. It took readings from the car and displayed them in real time... which felt a little strange considering the lack of wires!
A couple of decent prospects got sold while I was in the US, so I'm scouring Autotrader hoping for the right one to show up. I'll try and go to see one each week to get a feel for them. If the sellers are confident enough, they'll hopefully let me plug in my new toy. |
