Try disconnecting the battery briefly.

I've had similar weirdness happen after a flat battery. The voltage dip (or 'brownout') can leave some ECUs in a confused state.

Or pull the relevant fuses briefly? Might be worth trying that first.

Do the windscreen wipers work? I used to get similar it turned out to be the ignition barrel / connection fixed by just turning the key back very slightly after starting

Ha ha did he not know that, pfff.

I like to stay with my cars for MOT's for those sort of reasons. I once had a 40 year old Land Rover fail on "Passenger door not opening" when I got there I put the key in the door lock unlocked it and opened the door. He just looked at me and said "the drivers door was already open and i tried it from the inside"

Mmm normally I do stay with them, but I couldn't this time as it was a 'squeeze it in when there's time' job since, despite asking a week in advance, they forgot to book me a slot

Talk about ironic. Last week 30 miles into my 400 mile round trip I had brake issues, not a very good pedal, bit soft. All I could do was top up the fluid that was a bit low but half way between min and max. Dint make much difference. Now end of Sept I had a few bits done on the van and on the bill was, visual brake check and 1.5 hours. I obviously queried that when I settled up by saying what were they looking at for an hour and a half, or words to that affect. Anyway I paid the bill in full and said to my self I'd not go back.
80 miles in and I have grinding from the front. I've been nursing it the whole journey home trying not to use the foot brakes as much as possible.
I done the brakes myself today and this is what I pulled out
