Default Had enough of these mirrors!!!

Auto dimming, heated, anti-glare outside mirrors...........well it would be nice if I could actually see anything in them, they are so dark.

No better at night, even darker. Don't suppose the tinted windows help much though.

That liquid stuff in them wasn't looking good. Took the drivers side mirror out........and made it worse:

Squeezed most of the liquid out, but still looking awful:

Passenger side was just as bad.

OE replacements are scary expensive. Only one thing for it, ebay cheepo glass.

Supposed to be an exact shape match for the D3, but had to laugh when the mirrors arrived, way too big!

Complained and sent measurements. Got 2 more mirrors back. Not a perfect fit, but not bad.

Stuck them over the old mirrors, and now I can actually see things a lot clearer................ for a change.

Ok, had to sacrifice all the super duper stuff that the mirrors are supposed to do, but on the other hand, I'm a lot happier, especially when reversing

Exterior mirrors seem to be one of (several!) things that Audi love to over-engineer. The ones on the e-tron are cameras, which really do seem to be an overcomplicated solution to a non-existent problem, and have a ridiculously high failure rate. Vorsprung Durch Technik it ain't, in my book....

I'm sure I've said it many times before, here and elsewhere, IMHO auto-dimming internal mirrors are reasonably useful, unless you have tinted rear windows...
(So not fitted on my Volvo for example)
Externally, I find them pointless/useless. However that hasn't stopped me eventually sourcing (at a reasonable price) decent ones for my S8 because: 1. I could (using USA parts with stupid wording on) and 2. It came from the factory with them.
And of course I have a pair of standard external mirrors as backup.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

All auto dimming mirrors are very expensive due to the liquid inside. The same applies for the rear view mirrors.

Whatever you do, do not let the liquid from the mirror get out and touch paint or plastic. It will strip and eat through either. If your mirror is beginning to age visibly, replace asap.
