Default Heated but not heated cracked windscreen

Hello all.
Well, it looks like my front windscreen has had one too many frosty mornings and cracked.

It's a bit of a mixed bag for me as my S8 has the heated front screen option but the screen had been replaced at some point in its past. As you can imagine it was replaced with a none heated screen.

So, now is the time to get it back to standard. Or so I thought. Only to be foiled once again by the "no longer available" devil.

What are my options?

It looks to me like I'm going to have to fit an aftermarket, none heated screen. Is that correct?

Also, can anyone recommend a good auto glazing company who will work in the Leeds area? I would be willing to pay up for a good quality job with good quality glass.

Cheers Frank

I'm sure MJ has looked into heated front screen replacements in the past?

I know Pilkington will make small batches of screens, or even one offs, but the lead times will be an issue I suspect....

Can't recommend a fitter in your area, but from memory there's a kit available from Audi with the packing material that should be used to position the screen. I recall it's different to regular cars due to the aluminium construction and (IIRC) requires a bit more give than normal?

The only used heated front screens I've seen in the last few years have been in Poland. I wouldn't fancy your chances of getting one of those shipped over.

Both we and the Germans have looked in to this and its just not economically viable unfortunately. Pilkington wanted something like 6-7K for the tool and then about 700 each, from memory, so a batch of 10 was 1500 each. The Germans were talking to Saint Gobain (who made the originals) and they were in the order of 1000 each but in a batch of 20, and they needed permission from Audi to make them.

There were three original non-heated screens available in the UK last time I checked, but that was a while back so they are probably all gone by now so its pot luck now on aftermarket glass quality.

Yeah I think that's a pre face-lift screen. It's an option but I don't know if the green shade is correct for my car. Do they all have that?

Hi all again.

Does anyone know 100% if a PFL windscreen will fit straight into a FL car?

I realise there will be no heated screen option but will there be any other draw backs of doing so?

Cheers Frank

Yes, the shape is the same.

I fitted FL windscreen in my PF long time ago, I think around 2009-2010. Only changed because old one was a bit tired from age with lot's of small scratches and pitting. At that time I was lucky to find brand new Audi OEM old stock on eBay for £50, made best offer of £40 which was accepted, then changed myself.

It might be worthwhile giving A8parts a call, as they might be able to confirm if there are any physical differences in PF and FL windscreens.

The part number listed is for a PF car, but their ad states it's from a 2002 car. ETKA shows that part number is only for a PF car, but worth double checking with A8parts to see exactly where it originated from. If it did come from a 2002 car, then that answers your question. Hope you find a solution.
