Default severe vibration on steering

a couple of days ago I was driving home when I started to get a severe vibration on the steering .....I presumed that I had lost a weight or otherwise got a wheel out of balance

today I used the car again and ....nothing ! no vibration !

scratched head , which achieved nothing except even less hair

after a while I had reason to use a firm [ not hard ] application of the brakes and ...some vibration again , not so severe this time

when I changed the AR bar drop links recently I had a good look at the brakes , about a quarter worn ; front discs were changed about 20k ago , some wear but not severe ...a bit of brake judder

still scratching head !

must be a logical explanation , but what is it ?

Or possibly also a warped disc, caused by the caliper binding

this.. I had similar recently, just needed a competent mechanic to find which one it was and free it up. I am lucky I have such a chap I use. ...most places will just replace the faulty part, they are merely fitters, not mechanics

I replaced front and back discs and pads and now that the binding issue is fixed its like a different car

If it's a caliper binding, then the disc an caliper will be much hotter than the others after a run. I had the same issue recently too - must be the season for it.

seems I am in fashion for the first time in 40 years !

from the comments here it could have happened due to standing in the barn for 3 years with no use !

anyway , just going in the garage for the winter so sounds like a job for the spring when I am back in france ; was hoping to come to england in it but haven't sold the motorhome [ wrong time of year ] and have no garaging for that so will use it to come to england so that I can look after it !

tks all

ps just noticed that it seems to be a scottish problem !

As stated by The Laird, the first obvious symptom is an overhot disc. Just gently touch it with the back of your knuckles. It was obvious with my front caliper but the rears were not quite as easy. It wasnt so much the pistons sticking as pads sticking/jamming in the caliper. This is a frequent issue as some after market pads are just a mm or so oversize and with a bit of winter crud build-up, they jam in the holder and dont release off the disc.

How long are your fingers? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to reach one of my discs with a knuckle, not without taking a wheel off.

I'd recommend adding one of these to your toolbox:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/BENETECH-Non...J3U/ref=sr_1_1

I used one to check my disc temperatures when I had some brake judder issues a while ago.

They're a fun gadget too. You'll find yourself checking the temperature of everything and anything.
