Default Wanted S8 D2 Final Edition

As description really, looking for a fairly nice example, with full service history either by Audi or an approved specialist.

Do not want a black car, ideally a grey.
would love the solar sunroof option but understand that’s quite rare.
Would like a grey interior, but black is acceptable.
Would like rear blind too.

If anyone has one or knows of someone willing to part with it, or can be persuaded to part with it please let me know.

Thank you
Russell

Final Editions are very specific things with very specific interiors, none of which are grey on the outside or grey / black inside (they all have grey dash, carpets, headliner, etc, but the leather is red, cyan, silver, or purple), and indeed don't have solar roofs unless retrofitted.

What I suspect you mean is a late model S8 with the 20" wheels, which come in an assortment of colours and specs, although are still pretty thin on the ground. There is a lovely purple one up for sale at the moment which might fit the bill - there's a thread in the For Sale section I think. Also consider the A8 & S8 UK Facebook group, on which there was also one posted recently although I can't remember any details about it other than it was a dark colour 02.

Oh also, a full Audi history is unlikely these days since Audi stopped supplying most parts for D2s back in 2018. Most dealer techs have never even seen a D2, let alone know how to look after them Independent specialists are the only option now.

Good luck

Here's the one on FB. Aqua blue, platinum grey interior, solar roof. No blinds or 20s, but those are easy enough to retrofit.

Mine almost fits the bill but I’m not parting with it yet, sorry

2002
Dolphin Grey
Grey Interior
Solar sunroof
I bought a rear blind but I do not enough skill to fit it

I’ve just booked it in for a timing belt, thermostat, rollers etc.

I still have a few other mechanical and cosmetic jobs to sort out and then I will be happy.

There was a grey one on Facebook recently and another one on EBay. Not sure if they’re still around…

Here’s one on gumtree but the price is a little optimistic in my opinion. It needs some TLC and it will need the gearbox or the gearbox sensor (F125 switch) looking at.

https://www.gumtree.com/p/audi/audi-...ect/1442463528

This was the one I saw on eBay not too long ago.

Hi. Thank for the replies.

I have now requested permission for the FB group and will look on there.

Ricky D, judging by your gearbox comment, I take it that around 100k miles means an almost certain gearbox issue ?

Thanks
Russell

An idea of your budget might help those on here to assess whether you're in the right ballpark.

Also, black is best - but I may be biased

Not necessarily, many cars in the past were scrapped due to a perceived wrecked gearbox, whereas in reality they needed a fluid and filter change and almost certainly the F125 fixing.

Over the years the understanding of and attitude towards the D2 5-speed box has changed.
Audi always said it was "sealed for life", ZF said something a bit different, regulars here know better and 50K or so seems a common distance between fluid changes..

The F125 can cause all sorts of oddities, as can other components, but it's a particularly important and vulnerable bit of antique electromechanical design!

Any car you're thinking of buying, apart from the usual mechanical/visual/road tests should have a full VCDS scan too.

PS I'm with you on not usually liking black cars and especially black interiors, but we're a broad church here and I do talk to Stephen (Tintin).

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Ironically Big Red's gearbox just blew up about 5 minutes ago Went to reverse on to the driveway, nothing, nothing *bang*. Bugger
S8 in bits, Allroad also broken, obvs.

That grey one on Gumtree / ebay is a basket case. It started off as a shouty 'future classic £15K' about a year ago - there's a reason it hasn't sold. Assume it needs £3-4K for a gearbox refurb, and there is plenty else wrong with it if you look closely at the pictures. I'd consider that maybe worth £2-3K, subject to a very close inspection.

Never assume a gearbox is just the F125 until you've verified fault codes. There are so many things which can cause limp mode on these from the F125 having dirty contacts, to the TCU being wet, to shiny chunks in the sump. There's not really a mileage trigger - my first D2 made it to 200K before the gearbox went bang. The gearbox that just went pop in Big Red has about 95K on it (160 on the car). It depends a lot on whether its been serviced or not, whether the car has been regularly used (F125 and torque converters don't like being laid up) and also there's a considerable element of luck in how long the internal stuff lasts. Oil and filter doesn't prevent external failures, but it does prolong the life of the internals if done properly, which is a whole 'nother conversation. If there's no history of maintenance, or a gearbox refurb *by a reputable ZF agent* then keep £4K aside for when it does fail.

I'm still on my original box at 158k. In my 11 years of ownership it's had 3 fluid and filter changes and is still silky smooth.
