S8 FL Harsh Ride
So now that the car is working again, I can get on to resolving its other issues.
Recently (I think) the car's ride seems to have become quite harsh, and I'm not sure if this coincided with two new tyres and a tyre rotation that I had a month ago. Now it does have the 20" alloys, so I'm not expecting to float down the road, but I feel like every bump can be felt, and there's a lot of road noise that comes up into the cabin on most roads that aren't smooth. Sometimes it can jolt over larger dips in the road, though it never feels unstable or loose. I'm running at 40psi all round as suggested by several on here - I'm not sure if lowering this by 4-5psi is a) going to make any difference, b) going to put the alloys at risk. What should I be looking for/are there any known suspension weak spots?

I can only relate my limited experience. My current S8 felt harsh similar to what you describe, and it had FE 20's and on top of that had some cheap aftermarket harsh front springs.
I had correct factory springs put back on and 18" wheels, and it felt normal again just like my previous S8, comfortable but firm and stable, not wallowy. The 18's run on 32psi, but that's with 245 45 tyres. Last edited by Goran; 30th July 2015 at 01:17 PM.

36psi is the standard pressure.
If you want a chart for the fuel flap print this at the right scale and laminate it:

(internal dimming mirror added later)1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I'd have a guess at either poor quality tyres and/or front suspension arm wear.
I've had similar symptoms from both.

Yes, I've got the numbers on the inside of the filler cap but general consensus seemed to be 40. Will try at 36 and see what things are like. Springs are factory, and control arms did appear to look good the last time I was down there but I'll have a better look.

The 20's firm things up nicely, if your normal roads are well maintained B road or motorway
If your roads are more patchwork quilt than silky smooth then a swap to 18's will transform the ride, but just wont look as good sadly....

Don't the fronts wear more than the back? I think I'd have them the other way around.
I don't have experience of P Zeros, but I did have Vredesteins that got noisy and harsh when they got a bit worn.

I think most tyre manufacturers say new tyres to the rear so that's what I went with - could be wrong though!
Yeah I have toyed with the idea of moving to some 18" wheels. The 20s just look so good though - and I'm sure I found them liveable to begin with. My commute to work is along a series of atrocious A- and B-roads between Leeds and Bradford unfortunately. Numerous potholes, worn surfaces, and generally poor maintenance.
