Changing air filter - instructions?
Hi all
Could anyone please provide a set of simple instructions for changing the air filter? I'm not keen on spending money at the garage for what should be a simple job but want to be sure I do it right. Any tips? Thanks Mossy

It's in the big box on the left side of the engine, looking from the front.
It's been a while since I had that open, but I think you need to remove the trim that abuts it (just clips in) and take off the hose to the manifold then undo a few big screws to get the lid off.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later) 1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850! |

Full description of this (easy) task is in the Service Manual - Maintenance page 74 Section 7.29. (See Tech Dump in the "D2 -Common Faults" Section) + Lots of other useful stuff on how to save a shed load of money by doing it yourself. "

To follow on from the hilarious 'how many forum members does it take to change a light bulb', I'll play the part of the forum member that warns about the dangers of changing air filters
Well, not dangers as such. Just a heads up about the flawed design. The top half of the air box which comes off to access the filter is bolted to the bottom airbox half with 4 big bolts and some sort of captive nut in the bottom airbox half. Its a common occurrence for these bolts to become rusty and a bit seized. Hopefully they are not, but if they are try soaking in anti-seize penetrating oil. One of mine the head broke off and I had to replace the airbox. When putting them back coat in copper grease or a bit of engine oil to stop them seizing next time. |

its quite easy to do, i hoovered mine out and gave it a good wipe round, & fitted a jetex air filter to mine, also don't be alarmed to see a massive pump sitting in the bottom of the airbox
