Default No Start 97 4.2., USA

Greetings from the USA.ABZ. Replaced Fuel Pump, crank position sensor, fuel pump relay. Have lots of fuel at return line. Spark. Handheld vagcom 401 shows no fault codes. Fresh battery. New coil packs. New spark plugs. Swapped known working ECU/M. Still no start.*

If car sits for hours, it will start for a second.

Background: Purchased car a couple months ago. Mileage 160k. Hasn't been on the road since 12. Old gas, but started. Ran rough. Added fresh gas, ran vagcom, 3 bad coil packs. Once packs replaced/codes cleared, the car ran really well. Took for a 10 minute drive, and the car died. Has not started since. Discovered bare wires at the cps, Replaced crank /G28/RPM sensor. Drained tank (still had bad gas). So replaced pump and filter.

What should I check next? At a loss. Thank you.

Michael

Thanks. I think that only applies to 99 and up cars.

How much new gas did you put in after you drained it? Correctly seating the pump in the tank is very tricky with these - it can feel like its right, but runs out of fuel at 20 litres (5 US gallons) remaining. The symptoms sound very similar to what you're seeing. Try adding at least 6 gallons more to the tank and see how it behaves

Quite the opposite immobiliser issue is mostly for cars before 1999, from 99 immobiliser is in instrument cluster and wiring is different with no separate immobiliser wire.

But I still don't think it's the problem as it would show fault code in ECU, something like 'Engine start blocked by immobiliser.

I would suggest to try more petrol as well if you do not have at least third of tank already.

I put in about six gallons. I will try adding more. I do have fuel at the rails but the plugs are dry. Thank you.

But UK gallons are much larger than USA gallons

I don't suppose that start could be being inhibited by a faulty or intermittent F125 switch on the side of the gearbox (cable from gear lever operates it but mine recently failed because one of the metal prongs had broken off inside the switch and it wouldn't start at all).

If the gearbox is not in neutral or park (or if the car thinks it's not in neutral or park) the starter will not operate and turn over engine.
