That's the S8 gearing and diff for you Both my A8s have been 2000 or below @ 70.. the D3 is still below 3000 at 100 (kph ahem).

I think You misunderstood the question it was what's the rpm on manual D2 S8 in 6th gear?

I think Mick's reply is for 5 speed auto D2 and PsYcHe's for 6 speed D3 auto and 5 speed D2 auto

total gear ratios (top gear x final drive) for 1997 S8 are
auto 5th gear 0.804 x 3.726=2.996
manual 6th gear 0.730 x 4.111=3.000
So 6th gear in manual is almost the same as 5th in auto

If you want lower gear ratios for fuel economy you can go for box from A6 2.5TDI
DQT,FTF- 2.306
EKM, FTL- 2.182

There are several other options with overall gear ratios in 6th gear 2.625; 2.813; 3.000; 3.193; from 2.5TDI, 2.7T and 4.2 A6/S6 and allroad 01E gearboxes

I think the S8 auto FL final drive ratio is 4.111, check on ElsaWin.
Also, mine for some reason revs at 2780 at 70mph (gps reading)?
Could be the tyres, 2.12m circumference. Although as per equation
Revs = kph * 4.111 * 0.804 / (0.06 * 2.12)
Revs = 2925 ?

Primary drive S8 auto:
front axle- spur gear drive 1.207, bevel gear drive 3.091 = ratio 3.730
rear axle- spur gear drive 0.8906, bevel gear drive 4.111= ratio 3.726
