Default Bluetooth - How does the car know if its a call or music?

Hi,

So i have bluetooth in my 2007 3.0tdi QS which works perfectly for calls yet doesnt let you play music over the same connection.

How does the car know what is a call and what is music when streaming audio to it via bluetooth?

I'm wondering if there is some way you can fool it into playing spotify from my phone via bluetooth instead of taking a call.

Apologies if this is basic knowledge or has been asked before.

Cheers

There's a multitude of different profiles with Bluetooth, not all of which are necessarily supported by your hardware

Calls will be handled over HFP - Hands Free Profile. Music streaming would be over A2DP.

You can't stream music on the standard system.

If you have AMI, you can connect bluetooth to that.

If not, you could pay to get AMI put in.

Or buy an FM transmitter/Bluetooth receiver, pair that to your phone, and tune the Radio in to the FM transmitter frequency. That's what I used to do.

You can get an app that will stream any audio using HFP, which would work, but quality maybe questionable.....

Something like http://bluetoothstreamerpro.com/

I'm sure others are available. Depending on the quality of your ears and what you want to listen to, maybe worth a try

Thats interesting re the HFP rerouting app, I may give it a try although quality is really what I am after so it may not be up to spec.

I bought an FM transmitter from Amazon and its pretty good although finding a frequency that has zero interference is tricky in urban areas.

Regarding the AMI install, i see these on ebay for c. £300, how tricky is it to retrofit? Has anybody gone straight to Audi to get one installed, and if so, how much did it cost?

Sorry if this has all been asked before but AMI is too short to be searched

Audi Music Interface.
Easy enough to fit.
Fits inside the glove box alongside the CD player or instead of it.

If you have a TV tuner in the boot, you can add an AUX in cable (or two) and plug in a stereo bluetooth gateway behind the trim. You can use it plugged permanently into the cigar lighter next to it but as it is powered on permanently, your phone won't pair automatically.. I (eventually) added a relay with a trigger from the Park Distance Control's switched 12V and when I get in the car, it powers up and polls the phone to connect.

I used this one after trying a few...

EDIT* I think you also need VCDS to activate the AUx in menu options on the MMI.

When you say easy enough to fit? Is there a guide somewhere around to doing this? Do I need to cut & splice cables etc. or does it just plug in somewhere?

Does the MMI automatically detect it? I have v 5570.

AMI is plug and play. I have a complete kit for sale with all the cables, all you would need to source is the blutooth adaptor.

There are two flavours of AMI, you need to make sure you get one that works on the MOST fibre bus and not the CAN derivative.
