Hey IT, thanks very much for your opinion, trust me I do like gauging from those more experienced in the 8's what they would do. If I had 4-5k sitting around I would definately go the 4.2 route (theres also a very tasty looking 2.8 on autotrader with only 45k miles on just now), its something I will do soon.

I've decided though that Im going to give my current motor one last lease of life and go for the replacement engine. The mechanic is going to ensure timing is done and oil is changed. It may sound silly but I've grown rather attached to the car after it taking me and my gf very safely and securely all the way to Pisa in italy last summer and also then rushing her to hosp in labour recently.

I know it does sound like this mechanic isnt particulary competent but all he has done for me barring this has been spot on and he has also owned D2 A8's previously so knows his way around most bits. Just one of those things I guess.

Thanks to all for the advice

If you could do the job yourself I would probably say take the heads off and check the damage, but as you are paying somebody else to do the job another engine is probably the best option. Hope you are getting some warranty with the engine.

One last thought, is there any jobs worth doing when the engine is out getting swapped?

Only issue that remains unfixed on my car is a noisy ac compressor, i get a grumbling noise that increases with revs that goes away when putting it on eco mode. Is that any easier to fix with eng out?

Get the scuttle drains cleaned out thoroughly, they are pretty much inaccessible otherwise.

How much ?.... Crumbs, No.....

I was thinking more like 2 to 3K, e.g something like:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...mc-cars-EAF004

2002 model, with sports gearbox, low miles for the year and a very respectable colour combo.....

Not swaying you from fixing the 2.8 btw, but found your impression of the costs of the 4.2 rather alarming... !

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you guys know my 2.8 QS is back on the road got a lower mileage (69k) engine from ebay for £450 and all fitted for £550 including parts.

Mechanic did timing belt and oil change/filter. Was quite a job apparently, all cables were snipped on the ebay engine and came with a cracked lower sump and broken oil cooler. These were replaced and engine fitted only for a split on the upper sump to show itself. Engine came out again and the sump from the old engine was swapped in and all put back together.

Running great just now, fingers crossed, trip to inverness this weekend to stretch her legs

Thanks for all assitance on here!
