Default New 2.8 QS Owner - All selector lights on, no problem shifting

Hi,

I recently took the plunge and jumped from a C5 A6 to a lovely silver 2.8 Quattro Sport which has 87k on the clock and looks in good condition.

Very few problems with the car but usually every morning when the car is cold and damp (underground garage but near sea) and I start it up all the lights on the gear selector display on dials stay lit. This usually goes away later if I restart the car or its been used during the day and is warmed up.

I notice absolutely no problems with performance, shift speed, shift pattern etc, tip works fine although obviously I cant see what gear I'm selecting when all lights are lit.

Any ideas what may be causing this? It sounds a little like corrosion of some electrics due to the warm/dry state causing issue to disappear but I have absolutely no idea where to start.

Any advice greatfully received

Will post pics shortly if anybody interested.

Welcome to the Forum!

It might be the F125 switch which has caused quite a few people problems with the "limp mode" red lights of doom coming on - theres an article HERE about it on Audipages.

See also this thread HERE on the forum for more advice

Is it actually going in to limp mode (restricted driving and revs etc) when the red lights are on or just showing the red lights but behaving normally?

As Neil says, probably the F125 switch. Mine went not long after I had bought it and had previously been stood around and not driven much.

When you get a minute, say hello here:

And post some photos - we love A8 photos here!

Just had another thought it could also be the battery being weak and not up to full charge, this has also caused similar problems to a few in the past

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome. I will definately post some piccies soon.

Im pretty sure its not going into Limp mode, had foot burried into carpet yesterday and it rocketed up the road from a junction in second up to 6-6.5k revs before it changed up. I notice absolutely no difference in performance when lights are lit compared to when they function normally and car seems fast, just slightly faster than my old 2.4 C5 A6, which is probably what id expect.

Think I need to purchase a voltmeter and check the battery, what should I be looking for across the battery after car sitting all night locked?

Also is there any easy way to check for any corrosion that may cause the issue I have without paying for work to be done on the car?

Thanks

I'll get a voltmeter on mine tomorrow morning if that helps. And then get a VagCom on it. There's a register on here somewhere of everyone that's got one so, if you let us know where you are, you might find a friendly member to check it for a pint!

I'd definitely start with the battery - my Boxster had similar symptoms once when battery was running low, together with a couple of other issues, all solved with a new battery
