Water leak into cabin from front interior light....
Hi all.
Last week, I got into my car, after plenty of rain, and noticed there was a drip of water from the fwd interior light lens/surround and at the top of the 'A' posts and the bottom of the nearside'A' post. When the first dry day came, a couple of days later, I opened the sunroof to check the sunroof drains. I syringed water into the 2 fwd drain holes and it came out, just as quick, at the outputs at each fwd door frame area. Which leads to my question.............has anyone else experienced this? I don't understand how the water got to where it did....any ideas folks?

Has it had a replacement windscreen in the past? My old Alfa had leaky a pillar but that was definitely sunroof drains. I think there are 4 sunroof drains on an 8 if memory serves, were they all clear? If the back 2 are clogged it could overwhelm the front, that rain has been torrential!

I had that early on with my '8 - I was going to clear all the drains properly, but I've got an underbody attachment for my jet wash which I use to clean the winter crud off the car. Quick blast with that all under the car and I've never had a repeat occurrence - most likely was just blocked near the aperture.

There are 4 drains on the sunroof 2 forward 2 rear, the rear ones take a route though the roof down the rear quaters and out inside the rear bumper. I've had water out the lights in the headlining before too, cleared all the drains and not had it back....... so far anyway.

I couldn't see the rear 2 drains?
What's strange is that the drains I did check were already clear and it has not ingressed any water since. Hey-ho, I'll just check it again after next heavy down pour...........which should not be too far away!

Sorry to dig up an old thread, I too recently was working on my sunroof drains after a deluge landed on my gf as she sat in the passanger seat on quite possibly the single worst occasion it could have happened.. in labour on the way to hospital for our first baby
So I parked the a8 facing down on a very slight incline and opened sunroof and poured 2 liters of water in either side of the sunroof tray and the front ones appear fine. I then parked the car facing slightly uphill and did the same with the rear, it appears the drivers side rear drain is fine but the passenger side rear was blocked. This explains why a sudden deluge of water poured onto my gf the first time I used my brakes after parking on a slight upward incline over a wet night. Anyway can somebody explain a good method for cleaning out the rear drains, I used strimmer cord pushed through the front ones but its impossible to reach the rear drains from the top. I found the drain when looking behind the cd player in rear quater and tried pushing cord back up it but it wont budge, some serious crud stuck in there somewhere. Any ideas how to get it out?? thanks |

Have you got access to a compressed air line? Maybe at a friendly local garage?

I dont have easy access to be honest, I can try and ask nicely at a local garage though and see how far I get.
Would a can of compressed air do instead maybe? Theres definately something quite solid wedged in the drain somewhere, zero water comes through when sunroof tray is full of water. Maybe some heavy power cable pushed up from boot end may do the trick also. Will let you know how I get on |
