Welcome to the forum Matty
others with experience of tow bars on their own 8's will be along to comment but I believe the westfalia detachable bar is a good option
If you get time post some pictures of your car in the relevant section and youd be welcome along at any meeting we have, check out that section.
Where are you based?

Hello,

I fitted a westfalia removable bar and wiring kit to my 4.2 TDI when I first got it and so far as I can tell it is the same as the OEM bar (including Audi markings!).

I specified the actual westfalia wiring kit (rather than a generic vehicle specific one) and coded it with VCDS, again it seems to be identical in function to a factory fitted (but i think the ECU is in a different place for retrofit). If you want the full 13 pin including charging then you need an additional cable also.

It is very neat and un-clips and folds away when not in use so that you wouldn't know it was there.

You can check out the part numbers needed here http://www.westfalia-automotive.de/

I bought mine from PF Jones in Manchester and collected, they also do delivery and fitting if needed.

I also priced up the equivalent from Audi Manchester and it was over twice the price from the dealers for what I suspect to be identical components!

I would have came down but iv got to go away to work on that sunday.

Thanks for info paul.

So im going to go for a wastfalia tow bar but im a bit confused about the electrics your recomending.

Did you use the a8 specific wiring or the generic wiring. Do i need vcds to get the electrics working.

I also dont know what electrics i need as i will only be towing a car transporter trailer.

Me new to forum.
I think mine is a D3 which I got 3 weeks ago.
It's a 4.2 petrol 06 model.
I've been trying to get a tow bar fitted but Audi don't have any??????

Maybe a good job as they cost so much!! (£1500.0+)

So - I've read as many posts as I can about tow bars and would be happy to get the West Falia one and fit it myself, my only sticky bit is the electronics and how to get it coded. I see that Audi do it for about £100 but I could use that to offset the cost of a vcds reader and cable. Can you point me to the correct codes to use for coding the towbar? I've never done any work on an ecu before so I'm quite green on this.
I was going to go to PFJ for the tow bar

BTW., any Audi meetings in Scotland?

We do some, nothing arranged at the minute specifically for '8s, but the audi-sport guys have some now and again, and are a welcoming bunch.

Where in Scotland are you, a few of us have VCDS and could help out.

Thanks for the info, I'm in Peterhead, just north of Aberdeen. I've ordered the towbar but it wont come until mid next week, and then I need to fit it, that'll take a day or two.

Assuming you have also bought the Westfalia wiring kit then the install instructions are availablehere.

Have a look at page 32, you need to code the following modules:

01 Engine control unit
13 Distance control ACC
19 Diagnosis interface for data bus
34 Level control
45 Brake electronics ESP
76 Park distance control

Assuming you have a full version of VCDS there is a coding helper for each of those modules, you need to add the towing/trailer option to each. It's all pretty simple once you have it in front of you
