Default time for new injectors and to sort out this random fault code.

well i think my injectors are on borrowed time, i have just started to notice a lot of smoke on idle if i leave it sitting there for 5 minutes or so, a good thrash clears its lungs out but also fills unsuspecting peoples lungs behind me it also cut out not long ago and wasn't running on all cylinders resulting in me calling recovery out only when i got off the phone i tried it again for the car to bounce back into life like nothing had happened?!?!?! to top it all off no error codes reported, since iv driven it to work which is an hours drive and 25ish miles then back from london 120ish miles and around town today without a slight bit of bother apart from the smoke when idling for a long time.

i'll get a leak off test kit and find what are the worst ones as i'm a bit tight with money for another month or so, but apart from that i get this weird error code i'v had it since i bought the car, 16986 can anyone shed some light on it please? ross tech don't have it listed on there site with a description and iv googled it to know avail the other two are obvious just this one and it doesnt sound too healthy but then again iv not had any issues regarding running in the 12K iv done in the car and that code has always been present.

You can test the injectors in VCDS. There is a TSB somewhere..

After an overnight stationary period drive the vehicle with cold engine between 1200 - 1600 rpm till the complaint occurs. Constantly read the measured value block 13 and 14 for the smooth running control in the engine control unit. The values of one or several cylinders should noticeably move to positive.

modified injectors A8: with 3.0l, 4.2l TDI from: WAUZZZ4E*7N016685

Replace the injector with the highest deviation and all injectors produced between 1.3.2006 and 30.4.2006.

Example of production date: 060304 stands for 4.3.2006

vcds go to address 01 measured values below

013 Smooth running control
1)Cyl. 1 Injection quantity variation
[mg/stroke]
2)Cyl. 2 Injection quantity variation
[mg/stroke]
3)Cyl. 3 Injection quantity variation
[mg/stroke]
4) Vacant
Permissible values at idle: +- 2,99 mg/stroke
A If the permissible tolerance is exceeded
first check injector IQA-IVA adaption values

014 Smooth running control
1)Cyl. 4 Injection quantity variation
[mg/stroke]
2)Cyl. 5 Injection quantity variation
[mg/stroke]
3)Cyl. 6 Injection quantity variation
[mg/stroke]
4) Vacant
Permissible values at idle: +- 2,99 mg/stroke
A If the permissible tolerance is exceeded
first check injector IQA-IVA adaption values

015 Fuel consumption
1) Engine speed
[rpm]
2) Injection quantity
[mg/stroke]
3) Fuel consumption
[ltr/h]
4) Engine torque specification
[Nm] Driver input via accelerator pedal

I replaced mine with later ones EU5 ones, but not the very later ones for 4 digit engine code cars.I used the later ones as they were cheaper.

That's some brilliant info there thanks very much I found some posts regarding the different bar injectors whilst having a search myself, what prefix injector did you use? I know I'm supposed to use the BD injectors as mine is an ASB, are you using 1800bar injectors as I read they have a better spray pattern but didn't hear from the horses mouth if they are any good or made a difference in anyway over the BD injectors, I've checked smooth running but only on a hot engine and at idle only but they are deffinately worn due to the smell and amount of white smoke pouring out the back.

Whilst having a mooch through measuring blocks I came across blocks 70+ wondered what the Ms values where and iirc some where quite high, are they coded using the number on the injectors and I gues done through adaptions?

Thanks for the great post, I'll keep things updated here

I'll look for the receipt as I am not 100% sure of the suffix - on EKTA they were not listed for ASB (what I have) but the seller in Germany said they were fine and they were/are.

Yes, but I got it in dribs and drabs the same way as you and pasted into a document when I was trying to get best bang per buck on injectors. I Got BE ones for my ASB, and I am pleased with them as they are cheaper than the specified BD and better performance but that could be because they are new vs 190,000 miles.

No need to look for the reciept now thankyou, original thread is here ---> http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...-Advice-Needed

To test them you need to measure return rate of fuel and if on the bench spray pattern. Return rate is measured collectively and individually. Specs are in the workshop manual.

Thanks snapdragon, I'd already came across them, I'll do a leak of test see how bad the damage is regarding how many need replacing, i'v got a few things that need doing like a gearbox service too and it'll cripple me all at once but none of it can wait neither

Thanks, as mentioned in my first post I'll get a leak off kit and test them using the correct specs, hopefully it's just 1-2 that are duff.

Well I had paid for two injectors at £40 each to use as stop gaps then get two reconned and so on but whilst mooching on eBay I managed to find a full set of 6 off an A5 for £365

I might still do a leak off test see how many of mine are knackered then sell them on to recoupe some of the cost of the new/used ones, just tensioners and gearbox left to do after this really, then hopefully many miles of enjoyable motoring
