This was owned by the same person from 2 years old, and he spent a total of £36K on maintenance in 18 years & 300K miles, most of which was with the same independent perpetrator that did all this hacking. That includes a replacement engine from Prestige when the original blew up at 220K (oil starvation on bank1, likely due to a worn out chain tensioner), and a gearbox rebuild at 300K. I have every maintenance record, and said perpetrator was not shy on the labour charges.

Still, when the customer doesn't ever clean the car, why take any care repairing it? Charge book rate for the job and get it out of the door in the shortest possible time.

If anyone has a purple fetish after seeing MJ's work, there's a UK one for sale in the advert below.
The only snag is that it's in Hamburg of all places

That probably limits his market a tad Manual 2.8 PF in the same listing though...?

For my next trick:

Who can figure out what this is for?

I have no idea, not least because there's no scale. I assume the finished item will be basically cylindrical and that's just a section....
It's the two chamfered faces that intrigue me, one inside and one out.
It looks as if it's designed to push into a circular hole in a sheet of plastic or metal but then have something fixed from behind - odd.

Maybe for when you have to cut/drill out the rear numberplate fixings and want something more reuseable?

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

That could be said. RHD with UK plates in a non-UK country with locked borders and only advertising on a German selling platform.

GLWS mate.

Not much progress this week as I am plotting the audio installation and acquiring hardware.

I put a replacement electronics box back in after cleaning and waxing the paintwork. Its nice to have an FL1 which is lacquered under the bonnet as it can be made shiny, but it also shows up scratches a lot more than the FL2 matt unlacquered finish.

This Kenwood 5-channel amp fits perfectly on the original Bose bracket:

These new D-class amps are quite impressive. They are tiny for their power capacity - this one is as powerful as the Phoenix Gold paving slab I have in the back of the grey S8, and can output enough watts to melt the Bose amp in to a shiny puddle, but its the size of a hardback book! Its a very smart little thing too so its a shame to not have it on show, but it fits so perfectly in the space it just had to stay there. Plus this is not a showing-off build as I've already said. I will make up a carpeted panel to sit on top of the amp to protect it, then I can still use the area for storage, but I'll make some vents in it to keep the amp cool.

2Kg of hardware put back in, plus 3Kg of cabling. 13Kg to go...

Brilliant!

Heroic effort again!

This is music to my eyes! I desperately want to do a colour change to black. I am so happy to hear that it was easy to remove the dash in the end.
I have most of the bits except the dash. There are plenty on German ebay I just have to take a gamble and hope I get one with no scratches/major blemishes.

Might as well do a full ICE refit while the interior is out then I guess...
That's similar to mine. I still keep wondering, who the hell options an S8 with self-levelling suspension, manual gearbox and no Bose????
And may I add no towing bar???
mental!

The aluminium bar comes out with the plastic shell as it is part of the HVAC ducting. You can only separate the two out of the car.

Try Quattrotechnik or TP Autoteile for a good black dash. You can get just the shell and transfer over your airbag and the aluminium bar to save on shipping costs if necessary, as they contribute a significant portion of the weight. Or, hang on until later in the year as I have to go over and pick up some large stuff anyway
