The D3 unit is a motor located at the right hand side of the boot that works the hinge for the lid. Gets a signal from the central locking to open, and from a button inside to close.

How different is the hinge? If I could get the OE D3 mechanism to work, that would be optimal. Electrically I can make it work fine, I'm just worried about hard attaching points, how different they are.

The hinge on the driver side has a pin which the motor slides into, this is what raises and lowers the boot when you operate the motor.
I have the old motor from my D3 which I replaced as it would not lift the boot without some assistance. It could be that it just requires new brushes to have full power again, or it may even work on the D2 boot lid depending on the weight of it. New motors sell for around £400-£450 so if you are looking for a bargain drop me a pm. There is an attachment on this thread post #5 by PsYcHe which gives some detail
