Default Next Car: D3 S8, D4 4.2 or something else???

Hi There,

I've had an 8 for a fair while now and my D3 v8 4.2 Sport with 180k on the clock is starting to get fairly long in the tooth, it keeps passing the mot, but is hardly a show piece, but a working car and i've not killed it....I killed a couple of D2 S8's though at ~230k my FL one didn't owe me much and this one doesn't either.

Runs, but cosmetically the bumper incident and prior scratches down the passenger side means residuals are probably in the grand to two mark.

It's Bonus time and whilst I like spending round the £5k mark, 'll probably need to do £10-15K - Well I can do more, but I like buying outright and more would be raiding investments!

I've had a S8 itch since the first one, the 4.2 petrol is probably slightly quicker on paper, but it never really felt it. Good cruiser though, comftable and reasonable toys. I've been loosly look for one for the past couple of years.
Problem is apart from a slightly faster acceleration, i'm not sure what else it gives over my PF D3. I've also had an inkling for B&O, so it would have to have that.

D4 - Most these seem to be TDI. I'm not really a diesel fan, though actually not sure why. A lot are 3.0 and i'd much prefer the 4.2 - New toys, new tech, on the higher end of the budget and not an S either.

In skimming Auto trader, the idea of Non 8 came up and i found the Lexus LS600H most are the L spec which i'm less keen on and while the presidential spec is REALLY cool. I hardly ever have anyone in the rear, and it's the driver first and side passenger comfort i'm interested in. A shiatsu massage in the back and I'd never get to see the GF on road trips.
Hybrid looks fun, adds speed and torque, drops emissions and brings MPG up a touch. However it's also 4WD which alas the LS460 isn't and I must admit i really like from the Audis! 0-60 is comparable and lots of toys and luxury and supposedly pretty bulletproof in reliability!
Bit rare, EVEN more of a sleeper and finding a non L may be tricky at a good price!

Any thoughts, Idea or things to look at???

A nice D3 S8 FL would be great, but then I'm biased

Quicker, better looking than the PF and decent spec although high spec ones can be hard to find

I'd like to chime in here, although more D3 4.2 tdi related, but obviously crosses over to the d4.
4.2tdi D3., I love it, drives beautifully with all the power you could need on today's roads.
Things I don't like are - over 560 Road tax, no less than ten sensors in the exhausts ( a pain in the butt to access with electric connections on top of gearbox), two vgt turbos with electronic actuators to go wrong( also a pain to access), two egr valves, two dpf's, ........ a love/hate relationship really.
On the plus side the d4 with Sameish engine is far cheaper on road tax, plus faster and more economical.
Moan over.

My apologies Ivan.
I spent 5 hours parked at Stoke City football club today.
I should have thought on and let you know in case you were at a loose end.

Ray, The names Andy, :-)

Ivanhoe is my house name.:-)

I'm in mid Wales for the week, so couldn't have met up.
Thanks for the thought though, next time perhaps.

Hi Andy,
I stand corrected. Just had a guess and got it wrong.
It's a new job transferring the Security people from Leigh to Stoke for the Home games. Means that we might be sending a coach there every other Saturday. Won't always be me 'cos I don't do volunteering for boring jobs.
But if I get collared I'll let you know.
Enjoy Wales.

Not bad....Claims to be high spec, but i can't see that much extra. No B&O, massage or ventilated seats, though it does have the decent seats at least!
Good mileage and price though!

I've an old S8 TNK plate on retention that i got for my first S

I would say it's quite low spec, doesn't even have BOSE or reversing camera. There seems to be far fewer well-specced D4s than D3s, but the used parts seem much cheaper for the D4 for some reason.

Not hijack this thread but kinda on the same boat. Due ULEZ will need to sell my d3. Can’t afford the D4 I want at present so what’s the next best thing? Has anyone changed from the A8 to other marque and regretted it? Be honest please.
