Safe Web filtering
My eldest 2 kids are now savvy enough to have their own PC's. I'm happy to support this and want them to be computer literate - but - like any parent, want to filter what ends up on their screens.
I know no filtering is 100% effective, but was wondering if anyone else with kids has already been through this hassle and can recommend whats good, and not, it could save me some precious time

I gave up.. they were either horribly restrictive or too permissive.
One option may be a whitelisted proxy server in the house.. Tried that once, but meant that the intertubes broke when they went anywhere. Maybe find a service out there for it (though that means money).

depends who your ISP is and what they offer too as well, Virgin do a pretty good package, OK probably not the best at all the things it does, but a decent compromise I think. Its parental control module is pretty good but needs a lot of input from me sometimes to add sites to the allowed list, it evens blocks this forum for some strange reason, however it does (with a bit of work) provide good protection. I think the Virgin software was/is developed by Radialpoint, which I think you can download for free, try this?

My router allows me to setup email alerts of sites visited that you might then want to block - might work if your kids know they're being monitored to see what they're looking at.....
School friend used to work for net nanny which was regular updates to a black list based on your criteria - think that's still around?

Just put their PCs anywhere but their bedrooms. I put my boys PCs in our breakfast room just off the kitchen and ran a 3 strikes policy. They soon learned good password policy when a brother tried to use another PC illegally. I would control their acces by using the routers time share capabilities;reducing the hours they could use their PCs if they slightly breached the rules and cutting them off from the internet (but keeping intranet for schoolwork/printers etc) when they broke them. It was a constant battle.
Was great for co-oprative gaming though. 4 PCs in one room! I tried Net Nanny and a few others but the admin load was just to much.

.... So, as I feared...
Still no easy solution to this.... My preference is seperate white listed DMZ for the kids, but white listing is massive overhead. They are ages 8 and 6 - So its quite vital I dont get this wrong..... I think for now they might have to live with standalone machines, or at least establish a DMZ with limited access to obviously safe sites - Cbeebies etc

What worked for me - I think - is that I told the boys that I could see wherever they had been on the internet. I also told them that they already knew what sort of sites they should not be visiting. Then I left them to it [like CtL machines not in their bedroom] and they came occasionally to tell me that an innocent typing mistake took them somewhere they did not want to be. I could then check and advise. Safety and honesty! Maybe. They are younger and smarter than us. Ask any school computer manager.

Part of the 'safer caring' regime (without giving away too much) is to place the computer/ laptop in a public area, never in a bedroom (as with modern smartphones too). I tend to let them hardwire, by plugging into a LAN outlet in my kitchen, & never give them my WiFi passkey.

I think I'm going to try and setup a DMZ with a whitelisted proxy server.
There arent that many websites that they want to go to really, and I think I'd have trouble trusting an external provider 100% wish me luck....
