Thumbs up Thank you

Thanks Marcin & Scott; it's a real bug*er to read those ECU labels due to the battery cable in the middle. You have [Marcin] or will have, I think [Scott] the 'last' version of V2 of the D3 ECU, where the label matches the code - H12 0550 / 12 055.

Thanks Ray; you [like Matt above you in the thread] have early versions of the V1 version of the D3 ECU - H02 0160. I think you will have 02 016 on the label.

Thanks 'Architex_mA8tey', this post's added another previously unknown [by me] quantity to the complicated saga of the A8 Battery Energy manager [BEM]. [All of the many previous 4E0 915 181 C / H12 VCDS logs I've seen have had the component field returned as "J0644 BEM"]!

1) You've obviously put a replacement BEM in your A8, as I see you have a D2 and this scan is from a 2005 manufactured A8 BEM!

2) This firmware level, 0480, I've never seen in a VCDS scan, but like my original BEM in my Nov 2004 A8 [which was level 0390 until flashed to 0510 two years ago], it is apparently prone to faults that Audi should have flashed to take it up to 0510! TSB 2016847 explains this. [You may only find this as an Audi USA TSB but US A8s used the same French sourced BEMs as the Euro cars].

Exclamation Summary - BEM Diagnosis ...

So Guys; I regard this thread as 'closed' but why did I do all this?

Some of you may never have had A8 'battery going flat' problems, but those of us who have, find ourselves pulling what little hair we may have out in frustration. I've actually just replaced my late 2004 BEM with an older lower version one to see if I could get any more messages out to try and help with a current problem.

The cause of the frustration is that although VAG dealers have had the VAS5xxx diagnostics PCs [which CAN read history logs out the BEM, if the techie knows what he's doing], VCDS has never been able to do this. Uwe at Ross Tech said to me last year that "there was little demand".

However, just this week, in response to a Ross Tech Forum thread about battery issues, Uwe replied to a "you'd do everyone a favour if you added a history log reader" note that I made in a thread, to confirm it was imminent.

Cue Eric at Ross Tech; there is now a beta VCDS that reads BEM logs. Only it doesn't read mine properly

Eric told me that it turns out that the early A8 BEMs below 0230 level didn't produce History data, [that function was introduced in level 0230], and they changed the log format after level 0240. The Beta code log reader only reads 'newer than 0240' log format so Eric is acquiring a level 0240 BEM to work out what to revise.

And that was when it got complicated; my replacement old BEM was marked 02 016 [i.e. H02 level 0160] and shouldn't have produced any logs. But VCDS scanned it as H02 0240. Thus I had a Label/code MISMATCH.

All the responses to this thread have shown that the label does match the scanned values; however, I've finally discovered that mine doesn't because the ECU has been flashed to a later level at some time in the past.

The summary of all this is that Ross Tech seem to be trying hard to provide a BEM Log Reader across all ECU types [A8,A6,Q7 at least]. So hope is at hand if you're suffering unknown 'battery flats'. Unless, of course, you've got a very old ECU that's at a lower level than 0230, which doesn't have the history logs that would help.

Julian
