Just had a new sporty back box fitted by MIJ Performance
Hi Guys ,
over the last couple of weeks i've been adding a few finishing touches to my new (to me any way) S8. After driving it around for the last couple of weeks and after sorting out the gearbox issues (oil and filter service and recode), then getting it serviced etc i thought it was a little too quiet for a V8, so i took it up to MIJ Performance in Walsall for a consultation . Now i've got to be honest here i do know these guys well as they have built 2 previous exhaust systems for me , a cat back on a Mondeo ST200 and a full Sports with high flow cats on an Alfa 156 V6 and i was well impressed with both as they delivered exactly what i asked for, the mondeo a mid sport sound providing a nice V6 burble with a bit of volume when accelerating / booting it and a hooligan full sport exhaust on the alfa which set of car alarms in my street when driving past So it's fair to say I'm partial to a bit of noise from the back end What i didn't want to do this time was spoil the car though , maybe i'm getting old but i quite like the relative calm inside the cabin of the S8 so didn't want the drone of the full sport , explained this to Andrew (works manager at MIJ) and that i wanted a cat back mid sport just to give the sound a bit more base but without too much volume . We got the car up on the ramp and the exhaust system was in pretty good nick so he advised against the cat back as i would be just wasting my money , (very admirable i thought ) and said just go for the back box , nice chrome tips please I said , why don't you go for black chrome he said , the original exhaust has black tips , so it's a bit more in keeping with the original look , subtle but very cool i thought , so i settled for some staggered black chrome tips . So 2 hours later it was all done and dusted and again they have given me exactly what i asked for , now it sounds like a V8 with a lovely deep base burble on tickover, V8 rumble on acceleration, a nice little pop and bang on the overun but just not loud at all , certainly inside the cabin you can't really tell any difference just a little more base encouraging you to put your foot down a bit more for a listen . One happy customer again for any of you guys looking for somewhere to build your own custom exhaust i can't rate these guys highly enough . A few pics of the install |

I too can recommend these guys, though I've yet to take my s8 to them. They did my Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo a couple of years ago, and it sounds great - much deeper and better than the original. I particularly like the way that they carefully consult with you on what sound you want, and then make sure it sounds this way.
The only reason I've not had the '8 done yet is that the old pipe still works - but when it needs replaced, I'm probably just as likely to go to these guys as get a Milltek! |
