Default A8 D2 Nav Plus unit

After much thought (and expense), I've ditched the factory head unit in my A8L and installed a double-DIN replacement in the shape of a Sony XAV601BT.

If anyone is interested, send me a msg.

Unit is in good nick, and I'm not expecting a king's ransom.

Cheers,
John G

Arrow ...and ancilliary equipment

Just had a thought - I do have the whole kit and caboodle sitting in my boot doing nothing useful. The TV bit is useless since they switched off the analogue transmitters but the CD unit (6 CD jukebox) is also up for grabs.

Reason for selling - the unit has been replaced by the Sony mentioned in my previous post. My car developed a fault with the TMC unit and what with the GALA nonsense interfering with the sound levels plus the analogue TV switch off, I decided on a rather expansive upgrade (or should that read 'expensive' arf arf).

I'm PF so can't get the double din and if i could the facia would probably cost more than the head unit to fill it, so i'm out.

You probably don't want to know that Halfrauds have these half price at the moment, but anyone thinking of doing an upgarde might.

Halfrauds have 50% off all Sony head units at the moment.

Default Pics of install, note new surround

Not quite prepared to show my rear-end as I'm a bit bashful and I've yet to decide if I go with the capacitor and one battery or revert to my old caravan-style procedure with a split-charge system (new relays are voltage-sensing and therefore don't require an ignition-live feed).

New install took all day and relieved me of a shade over £320 but most of that was for creating a replacement fascia and running the RCA/phonos to the back.
I asked Mr Stereoman to have a go at installing my noddy Eonon E0770 DVB-T unit somewhere so that is now tacked somewhere under the glovebox/upper front passenger footwell area.

End result - listened to some tunes via USB 250Gb Samsung HDD, some Big Bang Theory, a bit of BBC News etc on digital. Photo from my collection now sitting as my wallpaper teeheee ;-)

Previous install using my JL Audio amp was a right kludge using a speaker connection feed for high-level into the amp, which was not ideal. Plus, it was interfered with by the GALA thing as I hadn't had the original unit out to snip/disable the wire. More volume, less bass = unhappy Johnny.

As you can probably tell, the amp was causing lots of light dimming when giving it some beans which is not really commensurate with a car of such stature!

Oustide shot as well.

Cheers,
JG

Default Further thought...

As you can see, my wheels are Zito Orlando 20s with their own centre cap. I went for the economy option of Nangnang tyres (as my mate calls them) but rather surprisingly, the ride is actually quite smooth and compliant.

Had a rather alarming incident 3 months ago doing 40 mph where the NSR coil spring went bang. Limped home 2 miles at 10mph. Pre-booked garage pickup for the next day on a low-loader as the remainder of the spring had become lodged in between the brake caliper and wheel - yikes. Apparently I was very lucky as the garage told me they'd had to replace everything in the wheel arch area of a (yuck) Megane. Calipers, brake lines, wheel arch liners, wheel, tyre etc.

I had both springs replaced. Comments from garage on pick-up hinted that it was a bit of a struggle alongside comical suggestions that it was as big as a lorry. I was certainly glad that I'd had the idea to scout the area of my 'spring break' - and pick up the lower spring cup that I managed to find - when he mentioned the possible replacement cost.

Anyway I digress. All is well with the Pride of Sussex (yet another name given to the car by a friend after purchasing it) and the stereo system gives me lots of pleasure.

I'd like to replace those centre caps with something a little more 'Audi'. From what I've seen on tinterweb, they seem to be all sorts of different sizes and dimensions for front and back. Looks like I'll have to get my tape measure out!

Cheers,
JG

Default Afternoon Dezzy re: Halfrauds and other bits

I admit that I'd been observing the price of that Sony when I went down there to get my sister 'DAB'bed up with an Alpine unit for her Civic Sport.

When I took the plunge, I noticed that the unit had moved to their 'Clearance section' and the price had suffered, going from £300 up to £599 which is a joke.

Suffice to say, ordered one from Amazon (£285) which came through from Italy apparently, judging from the tracking notes.

Bluetooth works perfectly on this unit and replaces a separate Parrot CK3100 which was installed by the previous owner.

One of the best things about this unit is it's Linux based which pleases me as an HP-UX administrator. Firmware has already been updated and I'm monitoring the requisite forums to see if I can get the fabled MirrorLink option working. That way, I can pump the satnav output from my Android directly to the monitor/screen.

Cheers,
JG

P.S. It's a lovely day out there so I'm going to go for a run in the old girl to burn off some of that Shell Nitro :-)

Default FREE double DIN head unit and rear CD unit/TV box

I've woken up in a good mood and decided that if I can't sell it, I'll give it away for free if anyone is interested.

I'm located in Surrey and will supply more accurate details on request.

That's the head unit (double DIN) out of my A8L 2000 FL, and the CD changer/TV unit in a rack mount.

Hi, assuming that's an RNS-D (looks like it) I could be interested.
As you may have read elsewhere I'm having problems with the SatNav element of mine so a total swap could be an option. mine also has a slightly "iffy" screen that I would ideally replace,

Also, I don't have TV but had been thinking about picking one up just for AV input. Though I realise I need some cabling too....

Whereabouts in London are you (edit, just noticed Surrey, but it's a big county!)? I'm just outside M25 near M40.

John is probably nearer to you than I am, but know he gets down to Horley so depending on whether you can sort something that suits I may be able to assist. Not sure on going to ADI yet so not sure when they would turn out to be though!
