Default Passat W8 Estate

Spotted this afternoon on the M4 eastbound. Quite a sleeper.

I want one of those engines sooo bad Its amazing how well the W8s hold their value here. You can't give 'em away in the states.

10 years back I had an 03 plate 2.8 V6 passat. Every option on it, right down to pop up rear child seats out of the seat squab....

But, also had LPG conversion from new, and had the W8 quad exhausts fitted from new. (Not Factory obvs, but from delivery mileage according to the reciepts...)

Also had a well used tow bar. One owner.

No idea why he bought it, and specced it like that.

Maybe he had a diesel fuel budget, and really didnt want diesel, but couldnt stretch to the W8 at the time.

Great car, sold it to buy my first Audi......

I’ve driven a couple of W8 Passats, and viewed more - really wanted an estate but in the spec I wanted they were very rare (from memory about 16 auto sports spec estates in the UK when they were new!) - they’re pretty smooth, but not terribly quick given the engine size. The d2 S8 would eat it for breakfast, I suspect

They very quickly hit the point where major repairs outweighed values. Torque converters were a weakness IIRC and sensors would fail routinely so EML on was a common feature of most eBay listings 10 years ago

Saloons were far more common than estates. You could pick them up for less than £3k

The first owners seemed to be mainly those with several vehicles, and the estates in particular tended to lead hard lives as dog/tip run wagons without much care lavished on them

I gave up looking for a good one and bought my c5 A6 3.0 quattro Sport Avant instead
