Default Phone cradle damper thingy

Evening all,
Finally got back on to the project after a few weeks up to my eyes in work.
Does anyone have a clue on what/where the little gas damper underneath the Nokia phone cradle is supposed to do?
Mine is connected at the top(ram) end but the body end is dangling not connected to very much. For the life of me I can't see what it's supposed to attach to?

Thoughts?

Hi, sorry to say I don't know what it's for but I've just removed my cradle and I'm wondering if you or anyone else reading this knows if there is a micro usb adapter I can plug into the cradle wiring that's under the arm rests?

Default Micro USB

Probably the best option is to buy a mini 5v power inverter and wire it in to the rear cigarette lighter supply. This will give to a micro usb connector which can be threaded in to the armrest.
I get mine off Amazon:

I have the same thing on mine. It looks like if you turn it 90 degrees it fits through a slot in the arm, then turn it back and the little lugs hold it there sliding up and down as the cradle is released (I hope that's fairly clear, I'll try a couple of photos later). The only thing is that the damper is worn out and doesn't work anymore.

Interesting. My 2002 phone cradle looks nothing like that. It has no damper and no place for one either. I assume that's an earlier design?

Mine is an early 2000 facelift with the Nokia 3110 phone. Does the cradle on yours lift out or is it fixed? When I was looking for the phone I noticed there were several options, one being a more generic phone cradle.

Mine has a fixed mechanism but a removable top plate and a clip-on, interchangeable Cullman phone cradle. From memory, I think the car had a 3110 Cullman cradle in it when I bought it (which I should still have somewhere) but I swapped it for my present Cullman 6310/6310i cradle.

This is how it looks ....

You can see some more of the mechanism here in the photos I took a while ago when I had to repair it:

The design did change in 2001.

The early ones had a flimsy fixed phone, a 3110 usually, with a feeble bracket that had a piston attachment that always failed.

The later ones had the 'cullman' bracket which was interchangeable for different phones, and a far more reliable mechanism

Not to be confused with the Pre facelift phones which were a different design again....

But really they were all rubbish, and no substitute for a decent Bluetooth handsfree, but that ruined the OEM look....

I'm trying for the oem look, the 3110 in the cradle is like new. Only issue is the damper flopping about.
Phone works well though it will have limited use.
Right hand head off today. Looks like ive got away with damage to the left head only. Theyre going off for new tensioners, chains and valve stem oil seals before refitting............theres light at the end of the tunnel!
