So I just blu-tak'd it to the place in the pictures above and jury-rigged a monitor. Line-up pretty near perfect, with bumper in view as required.
(Might just raise it a few degrees when finally fitting)

Just measured up, the very bottom of the screen view is 1" to the rear of the shiny trim strip and 2" from the rear edge of the bumper. Forget adjustment, that will do.
On a negative note, the coloured lines are a bit rubbish.

On the other hand, when raised a bit the view into the distance is better....
The lines by the way are "roughly" in line with the INNER edges of the tyres.

Thanks Sean, I'm also going to investigate doing it via modifying one of the numberplate lights as that camera is a similar size to the aperture they fit in.

Advantage would be not needing to butcher the mounting plate, disadvantage would be not central and not pointing straight back.

I had originally thought about getting one of the cameras that replaced the numberplate light, but gave it a miss. With the wide angle lens, I don't think you'll notice it being offset slightly... well, not compared to mine anyway, which is considerably offset.

Put one camera in each side; red filter over one, blue filter over the other. Merge the video signals together and wear a pair of these while driving. Problem solved! (with added depth perception)

Seriously though, I'm following with interest. This is something I've considered doing for years .... just never got around to doing it. I'm sure I looked at ways to switch over to the video signal automatically too. It shouldn't be too difficult but a bit of RNS-D surgery might be required I think.

I'd be interested to know what you were thinking, given that the button on the RNS-D cycles through the available inputs I thought that might make it very difficult.

One thing that could potentially be automated would be to switch between a front camera (mounted beside the bonnet release catch?) and a rear one, possibly using control signals and/or the switch for the parking sensors to activate them via relays.
The light in the parking sensor switch would be a simple source of a control signal for overall/front power on and reversing lights for deciding which to display.

Doesn't it already have a reverse input? Sure I read somewhere that it uses it for the sat nav coupled with the speed signal as backup for the GPS. Switch over could be done by software then, but if such an update was never released it may be rather tricky to reverse-engineer it.

It might not be that difficult. Cycling would be possible, using a programmable device or maybe a simple counting circuit to generate the button activation pulses but I think a simpler approach might be to identify the video switching circuit and bypass it, especially if it turns out to be a regular composite video signal. The hardest part will be finding where the video switching takes place, then it's just a matter of intercepting it and inserting a second two-way video switch after the first. Of course this would all be much easier with a schematic diagram ..... I don't suppose anyone has one for an RNS-D?

It's possible also that the video switching takes place in the boot (haven't looked but the RNS-D head unit pinouts might give some clues). If that is the case, there may be a single composite video signal going to the head unit that you could intercept.
