I’ve been looking for the ‘Google translate’ button! Our broadband is pants, but I’m not tech-savvy enough to to even understand what you whizz kids are talking about, let alone implement it!

Maybe I should get one of my kids in?

Hi David, thanks for the location data. I could find our more if there was already a landline installed and you knew the phone number, but I guess there isn't yet?
It's not looking good. Assuming you'll be on the Helensburgh exchange it might be as bad as 3mbps.....
Though if there's FTTC cabinet reasonably near it could be much much better.
Edit: Just had a quick rummage around the nearby streets vis Google Street View - no sign of any FTTC cabinets but the imaging is old.

No, there's no landline and the guy next door doesnt have one fitted either.
The 4G router looks to be the way ahead then. How can I check the 4G signal? Is there an app?

Drive over there with a 4G-capable phone in your hand and do a speed test?
A modern iPhone can do that, just type speed test into Safari, Google will do it for you....
I get 18mbps via WiFi on my broadband here doing that and oddly a very similar result via 4G.

I just did a different calculation by working out the road mileage from the exchange to the property, which is over 2.5 miles, about 4.2km.
If the phone line runs directly there (unlikely) again it gives a top speed of about 3mbps on wet-string broadband.

I'd get a free 4G PAYG SIM from EE, O2, Voda etc. and try each one in your phone. Run the Speedtest app. Or tether your PC to the phone wirelessly, with the phone as a hotspot, and browse speedtest.net.

See who wins for speed.

20 MB would be hard for us to live with. Usually me at work remoting into stuff with the wife and kids streaming in the evening. We get 400MB here.

Should I conclude that country piles aren't all walled landscaped gardens and butlers then?

Depending what u use internet another thing to consider latency and stability. 4G/3G will generally hve higher latency 50ms+ while wired cpnnection should be under 20ms even if it is slower speed. Depending on location 4G/3G could be less stable and also switching between 4/3. Sometimes it's better to force it to connect to just 3G.

My latency on EE is usually ~25ms and rock solid on 4G, but I'm 2 miles from the base station and the external antenna has line of sight to the tower. In a dodgy signal area though this could be very different. Three claim 'excellent' 4G coverage here and in reality there is nothing!

I'm 2 miles from the BT exchange as well. Best I could get from that was 5Mb/s with 300ms latency

There's no hope of ever getting fibre in a village of 24 houses so I'm waiting for SpaceX to finish Starlink which should give >100Mb/s

Many thanks for all the help. Ill try and do a speed test tomorrow.
And as regard to country mansions, I suppose I could get the junior butler to pop down to town and fetch a newspaper and buy a videotape when i want to get the news or watch a movie....

Where's The Laird and his staff when you need them?

I did that, got 25-30mbps on my phone, on the driveway, outside the house.

But the 4G/5G router didn't get anywhere near this, as well as a host of other conneciton problems, though weirdly the upload speed was better than the download. Spoke to their 'support team' to talk about optimising it, their best solution was to do a factory reset, then turn it off and on again...

Don't do it.

BT/OR only offered me 0mbp until the line was actually installed, and you have at least 14 days AFTER it is installed and commissioned, to change your mind and walk away, it's a no-brainer

Get a landline, better for now than mobile broadband - this will change in time, but the technology is not here yet, not if you are outside of a 5G signal

In case I am not making myself clear, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND you do not go the mobile route. Distance to the exchange is irrelevant, distance to the FTTC cabinet is what matters.
