Whine when cold could be a symptom of being a little low on fluid. When it gets hot and expands, it no longer cavitates and the noise goes away.

Its really quite vital that the oil is refilled/checked at the correct temperature to ensure there is the right amount put in

Thanks for the advice chaps.

It's going in again on Wednesday for a cam belt change and I've asked that they look at the gearbox again. I don't like telling someone how to do their job but as this is involves a D2 auto box I will ask that they double check that everything is correct.

If anyone happens to know the part number of the correct filter that would be a great help too.

After all that, the gearbox just needed a little top up. All is well

that was close, that's the risk you take when taking it to people which are not used with the common procedure of filling it up, they probably filled it up while the T was over 40C, so it got in less than it should've.

Anyways, if all good now, that's what counts. I am about to do mine this weekend on the RS6 and i am also a bit worried since this is a second gearbox in its life and it was fitted by Audi 87k miles ago and never head an oil change since and i hope i won't speed up its deaths, as some say when doing an oil change at high mileage.

I guess yours is now doing alright? how many miles have you driven it since service?

my S8 is due cambelt change and MOT soon, so may well check out this garage that you recommend. how much did they charge for the cambelt job?
it's probably something i could do myself without too much difficulty, but i dont have a workshop any more (until we move)
