I bought the unit ages ago when I knew the original was degrading and none were available.
I also reckoned even D3 ones might not be around that long so made a "pre-emptive strike". Oddly in recent times it's been less noisy, but when that happens you just know it's a matter of time....... I'm sure it was on this forum that I discovered the units were identical apart from the connector.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.). 2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one! Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later) 1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850! |

Filled with fluids and running again The rear hubs are very rusty Better One of the handbrake cables is loose, which doesn't quite explain why the handbrake isn't working properly, but is probably having an impact New Febi discs and TRW pads as per the front The rear spring platforms cleaned up nicely Springs back in place. I am planning on doing the rear bushes after it comes back from Nicola. The centre wiper spindle is very badly worn, so much so that I can't even get it apart. I don't have a solution to this yet though so I just had to grease it thoroughly, along with all the other joints. Back in the car - much easier with no bonnet! |

I'm guessing the bonnet will stay off until the windscreen is replaced on Monday?
According to an email I just got from Autoglass, that's happening between 1pm and 4pm. (Though they apparently will send a text message on Sunday evening to say which 3 hour window in that time slot they will be arriving in! )

Its surprising modern cars are still having issues with this.
Unfortunately the D2 spindles tend to wear very badly as they are chrome plated, which wears / rusts off, and then the spindles go oval The D3 spindles appear to be hardened and are longer than the D2 ones so I'm hoping to be able to put D2 arms on D3 spindles, replace the bushings, and fit balljoint linkages. When I get time... |
