Ill take the chances with mine shortly. My pads are getting near the top of the list and I'll bleed the system with some Dot 4 at the same time.
I'll put some nickel antisieze on the threads provided I have no issues cracking them...

Galvanic corrosion is a universal issue, but clearly more prevalent with an electrolyte, which your environment lends itself to more than ours (for instance, I've never had pinch bolt issues with the A4 or S8 here, though when I've done the control arms, I've always reinstalled with new hardware and antisieze).
Brake fluid works against you of course...

I don't know why they don't use Xylan, Fluorokote or some other PTFE-based process on things like the bleed nipple and pinch bolt. Superior anti-corrosion and also low friction so easier to undo after years of corrosion of the substrate it's screwed into. I suppose they don't want the cars to last this long.

Default MOT Legalities

"drove home with care. Still no MOT."

Hi,

For my learning: if a car is tested early and it fails the MOT test (not a pre-test), is it legally able to be driven home?

My insurer says "No". A failed MOT = no insurance. Potentially life ruining if a bad thing happens on the way home.

Is this correct??

If the previous MOT is still in time you should be fine, unless the tester advises that the car is not safe to use on the road.

Plus you are allowed to drive a car to a pre-booked MOT and back again and don't need it to be taxed either. Unless your insurer it's very restrictive?

e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Right and wrong! Its all about the cars state. Even if it has an MOT it still may not be road worthy! The MOT only proves it was road worthy at the test. If the car later becomes un-roadworthy (an MOT fail for instance) Then it may only be driven between the MOT station and home (or place of repair) if the MOT tester says it is safe to do so.

E.G. your headlight bulb fails = MOT failure and the car could be stopped by the police and a ticket issued! This could happen the day after your MOT..........

Also true Mike, but the question was about insurance not roadworthiness/legality. e.g. Would a failed headlight bulb invalidate your insurance?

That's a different question though.
I expect (and I come from a family with an insurance background) that the insurance would be valid but that the insurers would argue over degrees of liability, which may or may not have an effect on payouts and more likely on future premiums.

It can't make your insurance invalid for a third party to claim on it but the insurer can refuse to pay your own claim for repairs if you were sufficiently negligent such as driving on bare rims or leaving the keys in the ignition all night.

Default Great result!

Got my car back today and, after the original **** up, Audi Stafford have been brilliant.
They finally decided that the original caliper could not be repaired, and so have replaced it... Free of charge.
In addition they fitted the wipers I ordered, and have also supplied these for free.
While my car was with them I have enjoyed the use of an A6, followed by a Q5, and for the last few days am Allroad A6 3.0 TDI.

I really can't fault them. Everyone errs from time to time. It's the way these things are resolved that matters, and credit to them for the way they have done this.
There are some first rate dealers out there
