Default D3 Parasitic battery drain

Hi all,

It's been a while since i've posted but i've kept an eye out on the forum and been enjoying the 8 in the meantime.

For about 2-3 months now, I've been suffering from a parasatic battery drain which means that if the car is left for 2 weeks without driving, it struggles to start. If left a week, i also notice it's down but a bit better.

Below is the last scan I did at the end of October which i was hoping might give a clue. I can't remember if i cleared the fault codes afterwards or not but i can do another scan later this week to check.

I haven't changed the battery and am reluctant to do so without eliminating the other potential causes first and wanted to check what methodology others go through to find out where a drain might be coming from.

For reference, the following are known to me:

- TPMS has been disabled
- Soft close driver handle stopped working a few years back
- Rain sensor replaced in March - i can clear codes to see if it re-appears
- Auxiliary parking heating has never worked
- Driver identification component protection has always had this

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Oli

Has the battery to your knowledge ever been changed?

If not I'd suggest it's just time, like tyres they really are a consumable. As the cold weather creeps in dying batteries start to show they are dying.

Hello Oli

wheres engine 1 in the scan , does it have battery regulation on the vehicle .

Follow earth lead off the battery .....does it go to module before it terminates to earth .

Could be a battery like already said ,but could also have a drain on it .

Ideally you need to put a amps meter in series between the battery lead and see how much draw you have as the draw rate gives you a clue as to whatever may be staying awake or pulling low amps out

One of the functions of the BEM is to cut off power rails when neccessary to preserve battery change. 2006 MY BEMs didn't suffer the problems of earlier ones.
I have had similar issues and fitted an AGM battery and recoded and only had problems since when leaving the ignition on by mistake. I don't think two weeks is that bad if it still starts (even reluctantly), afterall it has an alarm and keyless entry to run.

I have also found that leaving VCDS plugged in when turning off the car and then unplugging it seems to cause a battery drain. Always close the controller and unplug while the ignition is still on now.

Hmm... I have the same problem on my car and I'm watching this thread with interest.

Audi think it was caused by a faulty EPB motor. It's been changed now but I've not had the car back so I can test.

You still don't have a car?

Nope. I don't want to hijack this thread but Audi have been chasing a ridiculously minor knocking sound for a grand total of 13 weeks. I've called them today for an update and I'm waiting for them to get back to me.

There's many faults in there. I'd suspect quite a few of them are old and related to low battery but the one that jumps out to me is the over temp of the air compressor.

That tells me you quite possibly have a leak in the suspension somewhere. If there is a leak then the suspension will be trying to level it's self periodically while your away from the car.

I don't know however if it will run the compressor or just use what's in the accumulator.

The other thing that jumps out is the instrument cluster fault. It's vague but I have seen on two occasions now where a faulty cluster keeps the can bus awake while the car is locked and that flattens the battery.

You can easily tell if the can bus is awake by looking to see if the lights around the gear shift are lit up at night when the car has been locked for more than 10 mins
