Default front cigarette lighter not quite working

hi guys
the front cigarette lighter in my S8 D2 works for the lighter unit, but not when i plug in the USB adapter for the satnav/car charger.

tbh, i think it needs a good clean of the contacts and a proper inspection. this would be easier with out of of the car.

does anyone know how to remove the whole lighter unit?
lastnight i had a look through elsawin and saw the advisory to bend out the negative prongs with a screwdriver, which is what i tried first off

thanks

I think, based on my own experience, there's something a bit non-standard about these sockets. I've had problems with various plug-in devices.

If you try the lighter from a D2 in another car for example it often doesn't work as it's too short to reach the contacts.

sorted
in the end, i bent one of the two positive pins into the centre so it allows the usb charger to make decent contact. this means the cigarette lighter will no longer fit, but who cares about that?

ive found that my tomtom satnav is very borderline on receiving a strong enough signal to navigate me, i have to put it as far down the windscreen as possible to get a signal, and even then some times it loses where i am!

next thing so sort out is the GPS receiver on the boot, no signal detected so i assume its the receiver thats dead.

ive got vcds and a pukka cable coming next week, so look forward to getting stuck into the electronics. im an IT infrastructure engineer by trade so this is right up my street

You can take it off fairly easily to investigate - boot lid interior trim off first.

On my old S8 it failed and when I looked inside it there was significant corrosion and I eventually wired in an aftermarket (powered) one, located at the very bottom of the rear window (outside) just in front of the boot lid so almost invisible as it was inline with the OEM one but smaller. A bit of rewiring/soldering was required on the lead as the aerial connectors used by Audi are rather different to anything you'd buy aftermarket.
I think I've posted pictures somewhere here of what I did, but only the external view, not where I ran the cables and patched in - actually inside the boot lid in the end as it was easier to get at.

This was before the days of A8parts of course and a new OEM one was a ludicrous price.

that was easy to get off
just like yours, mine is corroded pretty badly inside. however when i was jiggling it about getting it off i noticed the satnac has moved somewhat closer to norwich than previously indicated.

im going to see if a8parts have one in the correct colour. it doesnt look simple to swop innards as the PCB is attached by a melted plastic pole moulded into the casing ://

HPsauce,
I've seen you reply to a lot of posts in the forum so I was hoping you could help with a simple question.
Where is the fuse for the cigarette lighter sockets? I have checked the 2 or 3 fuses in the boot above the battery and they are fine, I have also checked the 3 fuses in front of the passenger side (I have a RHD) and they are fine. Is there a relay I need to be looking for under the passenger footwell?

Lighter fuses are documented in the drivers manual, IIRC they are in the normal fuse panel by the RHD drivers right foot.
Long time since I needed to look at those specifically, but I did find them easily enough.

Should be fuse #3 in the yellow fuse holder. Other fuse assignments here: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3155 The fuse on our A6 was blown recently after the little one put coin in it as it was left empty after using phone charger.
