Servotronic module wiring? And a bad plan
I love the D2s .. at the moment am at a place I hope you have been already..
MikkiJayne's ExxonMobil Valdez has my exact issue: The steering servotronic module: mine rotted right through the cover have a new(er) one with a connector (from a BMW) with10" of cable that all fits... where does the other end plug into ? Want to pull it all out and crimp and shrink tube it right.. Second question: the teenage monkey that pulled a used rack for me opened the cover where the lash adjustment is set(?!) Why will never be determined. The cover on this unit was not marked or pinned so opened right up. And it appears the internal spring is gone now. Have dial indicator and the zf manual for the rack and was considering measuring the backlash in my violently leaking old rack and moving the spring and setting up the newer rack to be identical. Trying to figure out how to hold it correctly.. Am I crazy? Thanks for the read. 2002 D2 S8 235k miles So many things done I've lost track |

The connector is behind the rear half of the arch liner. The control module is the relay box in the passenger footwell.
Why are you replacing the whole rack if its just the control valve that has rotted out? Once the rack is out of the car its only two M5 bolts to remove the valve and you can just swap in the BMW one. I'd be very interested in seeing the ZF manual for the rack if you'd care to share it |

The boots were full of fluid also so seals are shot.. newer rack was nice and dry but module wires torn off right to the nub..
I will find and post manual shortly.. Essentially rack placed in fixture holding tie rod ends then rubber plug pulled. Drop dial indicator within and move column connector to measure lash. Screw cover int/out..When tolerance range met pin cover with punch. I'm willing to give it a go.. |

Cool thanks.
Worth a shot swapping parts between the two then since they aren't easy to come by these days. I need to do the same with one of mine too as it turns left better than it turns right so something internal is broken hence my interest in the manual |

Well this is not going according to plan.. Got spring swapped over and screwed in cover to to about the same spot as other rack. Appears to not have any slop in the lash when pinned to the bench but have not figured out a way to properly hold the dial indicator to be sure..
Bigger issue: Found a module that was sold as a ZF 7039 442 102 but instead I was shipped a 7039 442 214. This is different in that it has the cylinder shape and the diameter of the outermost seal is too wide for the recess in the rack. Has the correct BMW connector however. I cannot find a 7039 442 102 to buy anymore, nothing in stock. New ones are insane$ and not available either or wont ship to the states. Considering machining an adapter to go from the approximately 22mm diameter outer ring to the 15mm on the rack and get on with it. I can troll the junkyards for a 2000ish 5 or 7 series BMW, an Jag xjs or xj6 to rip one off of? other makes? Or is there another direction?
