Default Small chip in windscreen

Hi,

I have just noticed a small chip in screen, very low down, central. As I've had the car for months clearly it isn't distracting (or I didn't notice it happen??).

Has anyone paid a screen fix firm to do a repair without an insurance claim? Anyone got a pal who works for Autoglass? . PM me?

Robert

I've never paid but always thought that insurance companies do it free and it doesn't affect no claims?

Yes. I have a chip with 4 x 4mm legs spreading from the centre just outside the arc of the drivers wiper so just away from the 'A' Zone that means a 10mm chip is allowable. I had it repaired by a local guy that drilled it out and put some resin in it. Cost me £50 (gave the guy pound notes) and that was over a year ago now. It has lasted fine, not got any bigger, passed an MOT, survived the frosts and not caused any damage to the wiper blade. I can recommend a repair over a replacement if it can be repaired.

Mine does. I've never had to pay for a repair either.

I had a company called Screentec fix a chip on my windscreen when they came to quote for the rear screen refit.

I chose them because they said they specialise in prestige/performance cars... Naturally, this was more of a concern for the rear screen refit than for the chip repair.

The chip repair has held up since April, although there is a tiny (<1mm) dink where it used to be. They usually charge £50 but did it for £25 if I paid cash and didn't mention it to the boss!

I've had a repair and a replacement screen through my insurance company. The repair was 'free' IIRC, but the replacement cost me £70 excess.
