Default 0378 - Coolant Circulation Pump VCDS error?

Hi there,

Ever since I bought the car I have had this fault;

0378 - Coolant Circulation Pump
B10D0 04 [009] - Internal System Fault
Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00000001
Fault Priority: 3
Fault Frequency: 4
Reset counter: 111
Mileage: 148677 km

I am guessing this is not the main water pump but a secondary/auxiliary pump?

Also guessing this is 12v powered and not belt driven.

I have Googled and see that in most cases the fault manifests itself with the in-car heating blowing cold air but on mine the HVAC works perfectly blowing nice & warm when the weather is cold.

Where is this coolant circulation pump located and is it easy to test?

I have scanned the manual and don't see a separate control fuse listed for it.

Any help/guidance etc. would be much appreciated.

Thanks & kind regards,
-=Glyn=-

This may be covered already somwhat in "D4 - Common Faults - Wiring Loom" and "D4 - Everything Else - Heater Woes".
In my case, I hadn't noticed anything wrong but it showed up as a fault code when the car was scanned during a routine service.
It was under warranty at the time but it wasn't expensive anyway.
I can't say I noticed any difference after it was replaced, the garage suggested that the car should warm up faster.

Ditto this, also repaired under warranty - seemed a quick easy job

Yeah I did see a couple of mentions in other threads after I posted this yesterday.

When I spoke to the dealer I was told they can't just order the pump but must diagnose & report to the factory first.

Makes me wonder if there is a specific reason for this given the horror stories about water coming out of wiring harnesses?

Where exactly is this pump located on the D4?

Thanks & kind regards,

Hi, I would like to say a big thank you for adding me to this forum. I have a 2012 3.0tdi with this error and symptoms. A so called specialist told me that it was blowing cold/warm because the car is so hard to bleed correctly which I thought was a load of nonsense. I will have a go at this myself but my question is, the genuine part is around £110 but you can get non genuine off ebay for £35-45. Has anyone used a part that's not genuine? I don't normally like that option but as it seems a problem part anyway will I find any benefit from going for the genuine part? Thanks

I used the abay one i linked in the guide, which despite the markings, i assume it isn't genuine, that was a couple of years ago i'd say.

I've had no issues since.

Hi, thanks for replying. I had checked the item that's listed in your link but it's not valued anymore, guessing because of the age. I will try on ebay now you have said that. Thanks again for replying.

I changed this pump today, took just under an hour but we were eating cream cakes and having a brew at the same time.
We did not remove the plenum chamber cover completely. Left it in the windscreen seal, just lifted it at the front and supported it with a wooden block.
It was a bit fiddly but this vehicle is an Audi, vorsprung mit bits that are not really needed.
My symptoms were no hot air in the cabin and the coolant pump interior fault on VCDS.
Price for pump is now £129 but my ever friendly spares man knocked ten quid off.

Well that's vorsprung of a fashion since in the D2 it required half the dashboard and all the drivetrain electronics out to even get to the pump, and then you could only buy it as part of the valve block which was £800!
