Well that sucks to hear. I guess when the time comes, hopefully won't be for a long while, I be looking for front and rear subframes that are rust free.

A bit sparse on updates recently sorry - had some technology issues

Once the suspension was back together I put the exhaust back on so I could get it back in to shape before welding. I cut the two backboxes off and reattached them with sleeve clamps so the system is more manageable. Funnily enough, a brake block is the exact right size needed to space the two pipes apart



With the pipes spaced properly the crack closed up again so it could be welded



There was a crack on the front as well where it appears to have encountered something solid like a speed bump or manhole cover?



To stop this happening in the future I made up a skid plate from 2mm stainless sheet which was welded in place





The rear right exhaust hanger was a rather odd contrivance - it appears to be a bolt welded on to the stud on the hanger. The rubber was perished and split so I sourced a new one but decided to come up with a better way of attaching it.





I made a threaded top-hat from bright steel bar, and modified a seatbelt bolt spacer to fit over it. This drops through the hole in the body (which was 10mm from the factory but had been opened up to 12mm by whoever fitted the exhaust), then the spacer slides on, then the exhaust mount threads in to it. The height is adjusted as needed and the nut is locked up which sandwiches the top hat and spacer in to the chassis leg.





This is the top hat sitting in the chassis leg. I couldn't get a good pic once the exhaust was in place because there's an exhaust in the way!



After 2 days of fiddling with coilovers to get a lowered but usable ride height, and an eyeball alignment, it got a wash and went out for a road test which went very well. It drives and handles just fine, and is on the alignment rack as I'm typing this. Fingers crossed it comes back with acceptable numbers

That exhaust skid plate is epic!!!

I think I know the exact time I cracked the exhaust at the front. It was back in August last year and I was navigating the back roads of Brixton looking for a restaurant in the rain and didn't see a huge pot hole in the road. I was 5 up so the car slammed into the ground. I could have cried. I didn't talk the whole way back home I was so upset.

Fingers crossed for the alignment!

I did think the dent was an odd shape for a speed bump, and I know we didn't do it when loading it on to the trailer, so a pothole would definitely explain it.

The alignment is good I was a couple of degrees out on rear toe but mostly everything else was in spec before, and all is after. Slightly too much camber at the front, because its a little bit lowered, and caster is off at the front which is also normal when lowered and is solved by moving the subframe slightly.

It also drives very nicely and doesn't steer from the rear any more

Due to lockdown its now in storage for a bit

Well, if I come across any D2's getting wrecked (broken?) here, I'll grab the subframes and get a freight quote!
Though I'm still yet to get a freight quote for Neil for the front valance, which I couldn't do once our stage 4 lockdown started;(similar to your Teir 5 I think) a few months back (we're back to "Covid normal" now, so I'll get to it soon Neil...).

Back on the Green Beast Its been at Mike's for a month or so as it really needs the oil leaks sorting before being put back in to service, so there was no point in it going home then coming straight back.



One unpleasant surprise when the front panel came off - it appears to have suffered an impact on the lower right corner which has also damaged the radiator We were assuming that the escaping coolant was the oil cooler pipe, but alas also the radiator too. I'll get a replacement front panel from Prestige, and a new radiator.



Engine out



Its been out before, as there are a few tell-tales like wire routing and cable ties in odd places. The sensor ground wire was just chilling out behind the cylinder head!



and the left engine mount wasn't connected. The ECU didn't seem to mind about either



A three-fer here. The knock sensor plugs are toast, as usual. The vacuum pipes are all shredded, as usual. Not as usual though, the header tank t-piece snapped as soon as I touched it. Tbh I'm always pleasantly surprised when these don't snap, so I will replace this with a metal piece.



One of the heater hoses is badly distended. This wouldn't have lasted much longer so hopefully I'll have one in the box of pipes. These are NLA now though.

I'll split these tomorrow and start cleaning them up. Apart from the radiator, this one is pretty much all the usual suspects

I’ve been racking my brain regarding the busted radiator and I can think of two scenarios which could have caused that;

1. Shortly after [ahem] slamming the car on the coilovers, the wife caught the front of the bumper on a high kerb. When she reversed the lower bumper was completely bent out of shape and the bumper was out of alignment. I had to take the bumper off and get the heat gun out and manipulate it back to shape as best as possible before reattaching it.

2. Not long before point 1 above, I had the car jacked up on the widow maker jack. I was applying some silver hammerite to the rusty brake disc centres for cosmetic purposes. Whilst finishing up the last of the front discs the jack folded like cheese and the front of the car came down on the deck. Due to the angle I was parked at the front nearside was semi resting on a kerb and the full weight of the car was on that one side for about 30 minutes until my mate turned up with a jack. Both front wheels were completely off the car and I didn’t have one underneath like I normally would.

I think it was the wife though!

I can understand why they are called the widow maker ,when I had the d2 i went to change a flat wheel in the car port ( very smooth concrete floor) i had car jacked and remove studs put my hands on top of the wheel and give it a pull and down came the car ,it was that close that I instantly looked at both hands to see how many fingers we're missing ,but fortunately for my they the back of them were just skinned were the wing had rubbed them against the back of the wheel ,(I bought a trolley Jack after that)

Hmm. I wonder if this is why the left engine mount was disconnected? It fell apart when I touched it.



Got the engine and box split, but thats it tonight. I was going to mount the gearbox on the stand, but realised I had repurposed the M12 hardware I normally use for this on something else recently and had forgotten to replace it



I'll get some more hardware tomorrow and carry on.
