In case of bulb failure perhaps?

Their reasoning might that if the warning bulb were to fail before the airbag you'd receive no warning.

Problem with that of course is the bulbs are now more likely to fail, being on all the time, and probably rarely get replaced.

What's needed is another warning light that warns you of warning bulb failure

I'm sure there's logic to it, just bloody annoying when in every other car I've driven these warning go away once you've had time to notice them.

I always presumed that if there was an air bag fault the dashboard warning light would be on and the roof warning was supplementary

Came across this in the SSP on "New Technology" in the A8. It explains a little more about the sensor and states what happens in the fault condition.

Ah, so it is intended to be a variable resistance. Interesting

You could replace it with a potentiometer and dial. Just request that the passenger dial-in their weight.

just did a little test today

am ~I the only person who didn't realise that when the ignition is switched on both the roof sign and the dashboard light come on and then cut out ...but if you switch off the passenger seat airbag with the key in the glove box then the roof sign stays on permanently as a warning ?

I had the light for the airbags fixed, and thus discovered that there is a fault.
Diagnostics tells me:

Address 15: Airbags Labels: 4D0-959-655-AI7.lbl
Part No SW: 4D0 959 655 H
Component: Airbag 7 Audi 050C
Coding: 00225
Shop #: WSC 02324 000
VCID: 3731B8DF19C1858002297198B-5118

1 Fault Found:
00656 - Seat Occupied Sensor; Passenger Side (G128)
32-00 - Resistance Too High

After reading all the comments in this thread, I am actually looking forward to fix this fault
This is electronics at a level that I can understand. Yay!
Ohm's law is easy, V=R*I. Or R=V/I. Time to experiment when I can get some resistors.

edit: I learned it was U=R*I

I noticed there are two single black cables connected (2), along with the white and blue (3).
There seems to be a potentiometer as well (1). Any idea if that really is a potentiometer, and if so can that be adjusted to get correct readings?

The white and blue (3) cable bundle runs all the way to the back end of the seat. So it isn't directly connected to the brown connector (4).

I believe I will have to take the seat off, to have access so I can follow the cables and measure resistances. Really curious what that part (1) is.

I tested that part (1) which must be a potentiometer. First I dialled it all the way back, and check it with VSCD. Value to low. Great! it was to high before.
I then I dialled it up about 30 degrees, and the airbag lamp shut off.
Clearing the fault codes one more time, and doing a new scan - no errors found

When I have time to really look into how it works, I will tell you about it
