I have to tackle this soon too. So I am confused now, does cutting the wires (open circuit) work just as well as shorting the wires (closed circuit)
Sounds a bit strange

No. Open circuit (thigh pad) is a fault.

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

just cut the blue and white wires in the black sheath going to the thigh pad

then use your multimeter set to ohms and see if current passes in the pair going into the thigh pad , should be no circuit [ reads 1 for no circuit ]suggesting the pad was faulty ....tuck this into the thigh pad , now out of use

next join the other ends of the the blue and white wires to make the circuit ; dashboard warning light should now go out when you turn on the ignition , as should the warning sign in the bottom of the rear view mirror

just for safety ~i disconnected the battery first of all , probably not required but who knows

worked fine for me

I've been watching this thread for a while as the airbag light on mine was a bit temperamental, haven't touched it and it seems ok now.

thanks pete , obviously what it is meant to do ...mind you my description is bad , it is actually nearer to the overhead interior light
at least if your airbag light stays on you will know the most likely place to start looking !

My Volvo has a warning light in that area for the passenger air bag and it just stays on! Designed to behave that way apparently, but why?

quite simple originally ; the swedes used rear facing child seats in the front passenger seat and that light showed when you had switched the airbag off for that reason ......in case you forgot to switch it back on when you took the child seat out ; or so I was told at the gothenberg factory

Not convinced really, it's the other way round. With NORMAL settings the light is on all the time the car is running to tell you the airbag is operational.
