Default VCDS help with headlights.

Hi, I've had the dreaded adaptive light warning come and go fo the last year or so.
It's now on and won't clear so I've bought a replacement head light unit.
I wondered if there's anyone in or around Gloucestershire who might help me code the new unit and set up the headlights as they've been adjusted manually.

Hi James
Is it a D3??
If you have VCDS then it is very simple to code it and adjust it.

Have you replaced the headlight already??
Sometimes is just an electric motor which needs replacing inside the headlight.

Hi, yes I have a 2009 d3 but unfortunately I don't have vcds.
I've been using a friends snap on Modis,a great bit of kit but I've no idea how to get into program mode. They work mostly on hgv and aren't too keen to have a play setting up my car.

OK, cool.
Have you replaced the headlight already ??
It could be wiring or the motor, sometimes AFS module on the side of the headlight, no need to change the headlight straight away.

I actually have one brand new headlight motor at home but it was for AFS I headlights. Not sure is AFS II (yours) is using two motors or still one but a different type with X and Y movement.

You do know that front bumper needs to come out in order to swap the headlight? Even to swap the motor/check wiring sometimes is better to do it as well for better access depending on what engine you have in there.

I would strongly recommend you getting VCDS or at least do the job using VCDS or VAS.

No I've not fitted the headlight yet.
It was only last year I had the bumper off to replace the ac pressure solenoid so that's not too bad.
I'm not sure what lights I have but they have led lights nearest to the grill!. I'll have to look at buying vcds, maybe I've just been lucky so far with no real problems.

Are you comfortable around multimeter??
To check if there is voltage going to the AFS motor??
And you have AFS II by the way??

Unfortunately my ETKA is temporarily not accessible due to new OS on the PC so can't check if there are two motors, one for horizontal and one for vertical movement or just one doing both. I am looking as we speak inside the set of AFS I headlights I have and there is room for possibly second motor.
Most likely VCDS could tell us more.
Don't know what else to suggest at the moment apart VCDS scan, checking wiring/voltage, connectors (headlight and AFS ECU) and inspecting the motor.

That's all great advice.
When I remove the headlight I'll check it out with a test meter and see if there are any broken wires.
I suppose the hardest bit is trying to solder a piece in , especially if the wires towards the front of the light!.
