Well as "Dear Prudence" was told "The sun is up, the sky is blue" so no time like the present for a 10-minute job.

Tape snipped open, wires identified (there's a 3-core loom in there too of thinner wires going off elsewhere so a bit of care is needed) and the switched earth snipped and tied back. All properly tied up with Certoplast again.

Silence reigns.

I'm not entirely convinced that the only purpose of that pump is the REST function.

Can it be a something like a "turbo timer" cooling feature that provides cooling for the hottest parts of the engine *after* the main coolant pump has stopped? It may well be that some areas of the engine need some coolant traffic after everything suddenly switches off?

No, it ALWAYS goes off immediately you turn the ignition off. And it's for flow to the heater matrix, not the main radiator.

It presumably has "some" function in normal running, otherwise it would be idle in normal operation. Or maybe, just maybe, that would have created other problems/cost/complexity and it was easier to just leave it running?

I think it also has a function of improving flow to the heater matrix, especially on a cold start, but even on the coldest days I didn't notice much difference when I disabled it on my PF S8.
I'll find out tonight as I'll be doing a few short journeys late into the evening.

Agree. Making engine dependent of electrical thing that can fail any moment won't be a nice solution.

Let us know how your 'heating experience' changes after switching off the damn thing.

The "heating experience" is fine.
Did 4 short "pottering" trips of 1 to 3 miles each this evening over about 3 hours. All sticking to 30/40mph limits on very quiet roads so slow to warm up.
Car hadn't been driven at all for 24 hours and starting external temp was about 5C.

Didn't notice anything untoward, no cold air, no misting.
On first trip there was noticeably warm air coming from the dash-top (demister) vents after a mile or so though the engine temp gauge didn't really move at all until later.
On later trips the engine was not cold and the system started blowing warm air immediately.

Pretty much the same as when I "killed" the pump on my PF S8 a few years back.

Just a little (late) follow-up on this; today I finally investigated something that has been in the back of my mind for ages. When I had the central air intake cover off to look at my varying fan I noticed a couple of connectors in there and wondered if one might be relevant. One was for the fan (wiggling that cured my fan) but the other I didn't identify.

This made me question "Is there now a connector for the ACP somewhere else that is easy to get at?"
i.e. Has it just been moved in the FL loom? It seems not, it's been eliminated compared to PF.

It is presumably possible to disconnect the loom at the actual pump motor, but to get at that I think you've probably got to take the whole ECU box out. So my wire-snipping procedure is probably the easiest fix.

The wiring pair from the pump joins another 3-wire set (probably for an actuator in the pump unit) then disappears between the air intake box and engine bulkhead.
That 3-wire set does have a connector, as did the 2-wire pump pair PF.

That 5-wire loom then reappears near the wiper motor, merges into a bigger loom then goes through into the cabin.

Its possible with the right pokey things. I was able to disconnect it from the motor in-situ by pushing the connector tab with one screwdriver and pushing the connector off the motor with another one.

I have noticed my car takes an excessive amount of time to get heat through the vents after the engine is warm. I put this down to coolant flow through the engine not being overly keen on also flowing through the valve block, but the heater in mine has a bit of a mind of its own anyway so it could be something else.

Both mine took a bit longer to get warm air out of the heater, but both were still much much faster than every "lesser" car I've had.

Thumbs up

Hi HP,

Just to let you know, definitely just a single plug to undo on my very late 2002 S8. B*gger to get to, but doable. I'll photo once it's stopped peeing down outside.
