Its the rear upright bottom bush in the B5. All the B5 rear uprights were steel, including the RS4.

I just looked up the same bush in the C5 - the basic A6 with a steel rear upright has a steel bush, the A6 V8 & S6 with an aluminium rear upright has an aluminium bush.

But, the one-piece D2 bush is steel isn't it? Albeit zinc plated iirc. If that survives, surely the split ones will work. Maybe they ought to be plated though? That's easy enough to DIY for a batch of them.

Just checked, and as you said MJ, the other wishbone bush for the D2 (4D0511523C) are mild steel cased with some kind of light yellow anodised coating.

Given this information I personally would have no issues using the Lemförder mild steel split bushes if that's all I could get hold of. At least it gives us an option.

In fact, when I do my partial rear suspension refurb in the spring, I will use only the after market options. I will save the single complete set of genuine bushes I have for if I need to do the rear subframe at some point in the future.

Not random at all. Looks like a job very well done. I'm putting myself through the same process at the moment so your picture has given me inspiration to ignore the onset of cold weather and keep going!

How did you get the Trapezium link so shiny? I've got a couple of spares which I've been cleaning up but haven't got anywhere near as shiny as yours. Are they painted?

This whole post has been very helpful btw. I've ordered up and received 4x Lemförder '35031 01' which should sort the 4D0505171L bushes. At least these D3 aftermarket ones are aluminium.

I've also orderd 2x genuine 4D0505171H from Latvia (£61 for the pair including delivery accounting for 1/3rd of the cost ) but . . . . did a comparison of the Lemforder aftermarkets 25881 01 and found that Febi Bilstein 32226 appear to be exactly the same (steel) and cross reference the Lemforder part on their website. I managed to get a couple of these in a sale for £6.50 a piece delivered. Once the Latvian genuines arrive I'll post any findings if there are differences. But the Febis do so far look similar to your Lemforders. Right down to the red dot! Appreciate Lemforder are probably the preferred brand of the two but in the interests of research and £13 I thought it would be worth giving a go.

Next conundrum is the eccentric bolts. The ones salvaged from my 22 year old spares wouldn't be reusable so I doubt my 20yr old ones will be much better. I've found the following potential replacements as I can't find genuines ANYWHERE (except A.Trad which is do-able for me but just hassle and bribery at Audi dealership I'd rather avoid for such a small bunch of items)

(clickable links underlined)

D2 part number - 4D0501387 - This is M12x1.5x104

Potential replacement - 108mm vs 104mm - WHT001662 - from a Phaeton (No3 in the picture) and does appear to be available online and likely okay to get at VW dealership too. If the bolt is M12 is the 'eccentricity' a standard shape accross platforms, does anyone know? I presume the extra 4mm will be manageable.

D2 Part number - 4D0501387A This is M12x1.5x85

Potential replacment - 87mm vs 85mm
WHT002262 - from a 2011 Audi R8 (No7 in the picture) and seem readily available. Same questions as above, is the 'eccentricity' the same? Again, presume an extra 2mm won't matter much?

Cheers,

Gregor

Hi, glad to hear you're gonna have a go. It's really rewarding when you improve something on these cars. So many just get neglected.

The wishbones (Trapozedial links) were shot blasted to clean them up. I bought them that way from Germany whilst I was planning the job and getting the parts together. As I was unclear about the bushes when I first started planning I decided to buy a pair of second hand wishbones so I could experiment. They came complete with bushes as refurbished units but whoever put them together had the same problem as we have so just fit the wrong ones. I changed the bushes and then painted the already blasted wishbones. It always surprises me how quickly un-protected suspension components deteriorate. If they weren't made of aluminium they would have been painted by the manufacturer so I just want for it.

As for the eccentric bolts, I got new ones from tradition. That said, I actually think I could have re-used mine. They didn't seem bad at all. If you get desperate, let me know and I'll see if I can track them down. I'll take a photo and if you want them I'll send you them.

Hi,

That's very helpful again, thank you.

Completely agree that any refurbing on our D2s is effort well spent. Lockdown and the lovely, dry weather was great for this. Off the top of my head old Alexander got:

Rear backplates painted

New flexi hoses all round and new brackets made up for the rear (resevoir level had been consistently dropping but there was no sign whatsoever of leaking brake fluid anywhere. 4 new flexis and the problem is gone. The date stamp on all of them was 1999, so they must have been the original ones from the factory )

Fluid flush and renew

All calipers cleaned & repainted in Carbon Metallic Grey (used Foliatec kit - highly recommend it btw - great finish and seems very durable)

Washer level sensor

Washer jets de-scaled (they actually skoosh properly now!)

Wiper motor assembly stripped, cleaned and greased where needed (works like new now, I think. Was getting slower and slower before)

New windscreen

Wing mirrors repainted

Windscreen surround painted

Headlights polished and sealed

HVAC drains cleaned out

A full paint correction and machine polish - Ming Blue actually has a definite purple tinge to it which I've never noticed before

A massive front and rear suspension component order from Autodoc including Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs, a lot of bushes, spring plate mounts etc etc which is why I'm now on the hunt for the finishing components for the job

Your offer of your old eccentric bolts is very generous thanks. Will PM you if required? I cleaned up the shorter ones last night and actually they also could be reusable, I think, although they aren't great. I don't have the longer ones so maybe yours for the purposes of comparison to the possible non-Audi replacements will be useful. And useful for others in the future too if they prove to be compatible. I'm hoping to have everything as ready as possible so the job is a same-day swap, so I'm not wanting any nasty surprises like bolts needing cut which will put the car off the road for a few days. He's a bit of a rolling restoration and used whenever I fancy a retro ride!

Are there any of the bushes in particular which you think need the official VAG tools? The procedure (ELSA) for the split bushes doesn't make me think that my access to a (decent) 10T press will help. Are there forum tools available for hire?

Thanks again

If I get chance later I'll post a picture of the old bolt I have. If I'm recalling it correctly I think they are in better condition than the ones in your picture, I'll check.

As for the bushes in the wishbone. I managed to change the single bush with the use of a 6t press. It was a bit of a pain as I didn't have the correct size of tube to push it out and the shape of the wishbone makes it even more difficult. I can't remember exactly how but somehow I managed.

As for the split bushes, they come out quite easily as they are made of aluminium. They will simply collapse as you start to work on them. Putting the new ones in is also super easy, especially if you have the correct tool. It's tempting to put the whole unit in a vice with the bushes in place and simply tighten the vice to force them in. This is not what should be done though and will put a lot of compression pressure on the rubber. I have the correct Audi tool if you want to use it. I'm sure you could make something up quite easily but if you want to borrow it just let me know.

Here is what I have if you want them. Long one's are a little crusty at the ends but I think it's all superficial. The new nuts seem to go on OK. You can have them also.

You can have the bolts and nuts if you need them, I don't want anything for them. You will need to return the tool though if you need to borrow it.

Cheers Frank

Hi Frank,

That's super generous of you and I'll be delighted to accept your offer of the bolts and washers. They're definitely in better condition than my salvaged ones!

I'll send you a PM with my details as I'd like to send you a PayPal (or similar) deposit at least for the loan of the tool if you aren't looking to charge a hire fee. And some extra to cover your postage too, of course. We can agree all that offline if you like.

Thanks again,

Gregor

Having been in PM contact with Frank (Spannerrash) he's posting me up his bolts and tools for which I'm genuinely grateful. Both to him and also to the spirit of this forum

So, in the interests of using the tool and posting back to him quickly I thought I'd have a go at seeing if my spare rear hubs could be used as part of the 'off the car build-up'. The more I can build up off the car with new parts, the quicker and easier the restoration ought to be. Old out and new in. That's the theory anyway.

I was faced with properly rounded driveshaft bolts (see pictures) But victory was mine in the end. After a bit of not-very-pretty nuclear welding and my trusty Milwaukee impact gun.

After the new nut was welded on it really didn't take much for the gun to shock it loose tbf. I'd applied some MAPP Gas heat beforehand but, on reflection, that was probably a waste of time given the heat I'll have put in through welding anyway. I purposefully overdid it on the welding as conservative blobs on the first attempt just split off straight away. And I probably couldn't have done it much neater if I'd tried anyway

Managed to get all the single-piece bushes removed okay using a 10T press at the garage (had to burn out the centres of the big trapezium link ones to get better access to press the steel outers - that's how the boys at the garage routinely do it anyway, so they say) Not much sign of galvanic corrosion, I have to say. They are just really tight. Gives me confidence in using the steel bushes.

Interestngly, this Ruville wheel bearing kit appears to supply the elusive eccentric bolts and washers. Part of the Schaeffler Group who appear to supply FAG, INA and LUK. I think I trust FAG and INA as brands, but does anyone know about Ruville? Maybe just the same stuff packaged in different colours? The equivalent FAG kit includes the eccentric washer but not the bolt, judging by the pictures. I've messaged them to ask why and will feed back to the forum.

Wishbones cleaned up nicely with wire brush, Swarfega and Scotchy pads. Might follow Frank's example and paint them though.
