 The diagrams in elsawin never seem to make it clear if the part is drive side dependent

I had the same problem with the up/down warning light, this can be caused by a faulty leveling sensor
I was told by my dealer that they can check the code once the "up/down" light is on the dash, When i had mine checked it turned out to be the rear leveling sensor at fault causing the lights not to level, when the car was stationary the xenon lights would make a lot of noise like a stuck motor and move up and down trying to level, New rear sensor fitted and all ok

Well, as Ian said, it's on the driver's side.
But it's not part number 4Z7-907-357 (which is what I bought!), it's 4AO 907 445 A. B****r!  EDIT: On ebay this part number is listed as a WING / DOOR MIRROR MEMORY MODULE 4A0 907 445 A Off to look on the passenger side.....

Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!  Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course.  (internal dimming mirror added later)1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
