The law requires that the windows on the vehicle allow at least:
75 per cent of light through the front windscreen
70 per cent of light through the front side windows

In most modern vehicles there is a slight tint added to the windows when they are made. If you add any more tint it’s likely to result in the windows failing to meet the legal requirements.

The rules on tinted windows don’t apply to the rear windscreen or the rear passenger windows.

Excuse my ignorance but is this age related too? As i have been told that the Land8 can be done front and rear the same shade.

Car Window Tinting Law in the UK

Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) Statement -

The window tinting law in the UK states that the specifications are:
a) The law is for Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985
b) The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
c) The front side windows (to either side of the drivers’ head) must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.

If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light, the vehicle is breaking UK Window tinting law. You also need to consider how much the existing glass is timted by before adding any further tint as the above figures are based on total tint / light remaining transmitted

It is ILLEGAL to tint the front windscreen at all........ a sunstrip is allowed but can only cover a small percentage of the screen (cant remember the actual measurement) but it cannot infringe on the arc made by the windscreen wipers (some people put smaller wipers on to get around this but this is also technically illegal).

So, what could happen if you flout the law?

a) You run the risk of being stopped and fined – you are basically handing the police a ‘reason’ to stop your vehicle. Who knows what they might find then, giving them a reason to impound the car if it is considered dangerous to drive and/or could be given a prohobition order until removed!

b) You will be required to remove the window tinting film (at cost) and present your car to the Police to show them that it has been returned to a legal status.

c) If you have an accident and it can be proven that the reduced vision caused by the illegal film was a contributing factor, you are likely to get part or full blame – even if it was not under normal circumstances your fault!

d) Even worse – your insurer – if they stand to be in a position where they are looking at full acceptance of liability (as you were at fault) – may determine that your insurance is invalidated! and you will be looking at footing the costs on your own for your own vehicle and any other damage to third party vehicles or property.

Be warned - having tinted car windows might look great – and you may get away with it – but is it worth the risk?

That bit sounds unrealistic. The wipers on my S8 go right over the sunstrip built in to the windscreen and almost to the top of the glass on the outside; overlap is about 4" to 5"!

Have they softened the rule? My Father always complains about this, but when I was looking in the latest Highway Code for something else, I spotted this above...

for once the law makes sense here

its true that as a biker during the day you could wear sunglasses and there wouldnt be any difference, but with a visor tinted it would leave you with bad vision at night or having the visor always up, same for a car we can wear sunglasses but they are removable at night wheras the tints are not.

I would rather the car had the same tint all round but safety first!. I am supprised no one has invented darkened one way tints that let the light in as per normal but look dark from the outside, could still cut out harmfull UV light and would allow the car to have darkened look all over

would probably get stopped everyday though
