Default The comfort of the economy

No, not the eurozone. Thats fecked, we know that. I'm talking V8 economy...

I took Frank 2 for a trip to Brum and back yesterday.

It was a joy. Genuinely.

I've spent so long dissing the standard crud looking seats, I've never sat in them long enough to actually try them out. Likewise, sure, the suspension looks silly stuck up in the air like that, especially with Avus wheels which strictly belong 20 mm closer to the body, but you know what, its supremely comfortable.

Id go so far to say that Frank 2 is more comfortable than my D3 was, which is quite plausible as my D3 was a sport etc.

I guess I'm still a bit shocked really.

Dont get me wrong, I still dislike the look the of the standard car, and the sport / S8 look still looks a million times better imo, but I'm becoming strangely attracted to this car - in its current form, with naff seats and wobbly suspension. It still goes round corners ok, you just have to watch you dont scrape the door mirrors with the body roll, or fall out of the lazy boy settees.

And the economy. Its not as good as the 3.0 Tdi obviously, but its a heck of a lot closer than it ought to be.

I drove a D2 S8 last night, which was satisfyingly brisk, which was nice, but my god was it bumpy.

I think im getting old....

Anyway, back to economy. I dont have any numbers from an S8 to hand, so I'll post what the A8 is capable of, and perhaps an S8 owner can volunteer.

This photo is of the car, having had a full tank of regular unleaded, doing a GPS verified 70 mph and after 20 + miles of motorway cruising I'm showing 655 miles in the tank on a level stretch of motorway (ie not downhill)

So. My 2 questions:

1) If anyone with an S8 has the inclination to repeat a similar test, what is the range you see ?

2) What RPM are you pulling at 70 ?

we both know the range indicated is stupidly optimistic, you won't get anywhere near that, no matter how carefully you drive him

PS your brake pads are worn out

Best I ever got from my D2 was just over 500 miles from a tank, on a run to Bracknell, pretty constant 80, and that was about 25mpg, started off showing best part of 700 miles at one point, but drops very quickly after that.

Ooo, sounds like a challenge...

Agreed, DIS is optimistic most of the time - Hence I'm interested in the relitive figures, not the absolute possibility....

Range is calculated on a recent average. Its more useful than the all time average or the instant in this case.

Brake bads are fine. Its the last dash error I have to fix.....

Best I've seen as range is about 500 "pootling" along the A1(M).
About 2800rpm I think at 70, but why would you be doing that in an S8?

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I must be the saddest keeper of mileage/economy data of the D2 S8 owners. I handed over the file from my last S8 to Davids8 with every tank of petrol recorded. I'm doing the same with the current, remapped, S8.

Both, sometimes, would give a range of a little over 500 miles with a full tank, but you're lucky to get 400. And, overall, if you honestly get more than 23mpg form an S8, then you need to enjoy it more!

Planned mods: auto-dimming rear view mirror, dash cam (as steamship's), fit the ski hatch, refit philips drl's (or maybe not - nope, definitely not - horrible botch!).

the most indicated range I saw, after filling up and just setting off on the motorway (in France) was just over 500, maybe 525miles.
The most miles I actually dared to cross before filling up was around 425 (all motorway miles at 70mph).
Rpm at 70mph was approx 2780 with 18" stock wheels.

Maybe it's just me but any petrol car that I have struggles to get over 21mpg. I do mostly local runs and even 1.8 does not do better then 21mpg

D3 --> D2? 'Back to basics'? Ian, how can you now live without ACC and B&O? I'm confused.

FL 2002 3.7 QS @ 70 mph. This car is on 245/50R18 tyres. With such taller tyres speedo matches with GPS speed.
