Strong burning smell in interior and no fans
Hi,
I got into my car a couple of days ago and there was a strong plastic/electrical burning smell. I noticed it as soon as I opened the door. This was the first time I'd used the car on that day and it was fine the previous evening. I couldn't work out where exactly the smell was coming from as it seemed to have filled the car. I opened the bonnet but couldn't smell anything there. After starting the engine, I noticed the fan blowers weren't working on any mode. I think it may be the fan blower or resistor at fault. They were exposed to water around 18 months ago when my bonnet drains got blocked but they have been working fine since. However, I don't understand why it would smell of burning before I'd even started the car, unless something had shorted overnight. The smell is still there two days later (I've not used the car since). Has anyone had a similar problem? Thanks.

Had the resistor burnt out a couple of months ago. Smell is still in the car, hard to get it out.

I purchased a fan and resistor a couple of weeks ago and have just got around to replacing them.
The resistor input plug has melted and exposed the wiring - this would have been the source of the burning smell! I have attached some photos. It looks like I'm going to have to find a replacement plug and replace some of the wiring loom before I can fit the replacements. I'm still not sure how this could have happened overnight! I wouldn't have thought there would be a live 12V feed to the resistor while the car is switched off and parked, although I've heard some cars come with a "solar roof" option to keep the fans blowing slowly while it's parked which may be the cause (mine doesn't have this option).

Maybe water got into your fan and "made a connection"?

Yes, I think it's definitely related to the water ingress from last year. I'm surprised the fuse didn't blow before the plug melted though.
Hopefully my original fan motor still works - I will try replacing the resistor on its own once I've sorted out the wiring. The part number for the 4-pin plug is 1J0919231 for future reference.

1J0919231 = same as EPB motor. The Audi ones are better than the cheap ones on Aliexpress or ebay.
They work fine but are pre-wired but the pins don't seem to be extractable, however they may suit you depending how you do the repair. If you need the metal pins, send me a post address PM and I will post them to you. I bought strips of them. PS you can get useful pin extractors on aliexpress for ~£2 Last edited by snapdragon; 14th March 2018 at 08:35 PM. |
