hi guys, I am back on this now.

I have tried to 'rematch' the key to the car and this does not work.

I am thinking maybe the when the previous owner suggested the vacuum control pump was faulty this was perhaps wrong because the central locking works when I use the key on the drivers side, all doors and boot unlock fine
so I guess the pump must be doing its job.

The fob is working, a garage tested that for me to check it was emmiting a signal and it is.

So next question I guess, is would there be a sensor inside the car which could be failed ?

The entire remote unlocking control is housed in the central locking module (the pump), which is why replacing it may have been suggested in the first place.
There is a repair procedure for the receiver aerial, which can cause reception issues with the remote.
Can't find the procedure currently, might be on Audipages, or maybe I found it in the tech dump?
There is an aerial hack used for B5's here.

For reference, the central locking module on the D2 is on the left hand side of the boot above the left hand wheel arch (requires a fair bit of trim removal).
