Default front pad brand choice

the a8 is a bit squeeky on stopping i think due to cheap pads.
front disks are new rears need changing
i have the 8 pad lucas set up on the 4.2 and looking on eure for standard pads as fast road are well onto the hundreds of pounds
so the choice is between pagid although as its euro and own the name they are not what they used to be or brembo,
is there anything between them

Given those choices, Brembo for preference.

Go for Brembo. I had Pagid once and they cracked causing a number of issues. See my thread which I'll try and get the link to.

I always go for brembo pads and discs front and rear. Never had a problem.
Except for rear calipers sticking, but that's a caliper issue.

There are 2 different brakes on PF D2 A8, 314 and 323mm front brakes. Audi part numbers are different for front pads for different sizes, I think they can be interchanged but not 100% sure. The difference is that 314mm pads comes with counter weight to reduce nose, vibration and 323mm without, probably because they would get too close to wheel with the weights.

I have 323mm brakes and I had some very hard unknown make pads for about £20(OEM are over £150) and they would squeak a lot. On the plus side they did not waer at all and there was no brake dust on wheels. In about 13-15k miles there was barely any wear at all, disks was probably more worn than pads.

Last year I changed to Apec pads and have been very happy with them, decent stopping power, does not squeak, does not brake down at high temperatures when braking hard and a lot but theres is a fair amount of brake dust on wheels but not as much as from OEM pads. Got them for about £8 from e-bay. That reminds me that my intention was to buy couple more sets if I liked them. Off to ebay now see if I can find them again.

Edit:
Found them http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAKE-PADS...item20e1dfba93
5 sets left, I think I will buy another 2, that should sort me out for another 10 years.
