Its amazing the lack of safety compared to what's on the roads these days.

Crumbs. Great post. A few thoughts:

1) Convertible beetle. Seriously ?

2) Most of the car doors just fell open, and people just fall out. Thats horrific. You just take it for granted these days you'd stay in the car when you crash. I guess mandatory seatbelts helped quite a bit with that.

3) If the 70 mph speed limit was design around 'safety' with this kind of 'design' in mind, surely we must be good for at least twice that by todays standards !!

My thoughts were similar, especially the convertible Beetle (if fact, any Beetle…). I did think three other things though:

1 - they seemed to be going slower than the cars go round the 'Ring these days (certainly in my experience),
2 - the track seems in much better nick today than then,
3 - makes me want to watch Rush again….

I once saw a race where a beetle broke in two halves near the end of the race and the rear section containg a fat Irishman overtook the front section and won the race. It was the number 53 car I think.

It did looks terrifying back then though.

Perfect timing! I was just watching this last night.

Interesting to compare how it was 40 years ago, my God those cars were unsafe, almost everyone rolled over! Comparing 2013 Nurburgring crashes almost on one rolls their car.
