Default My 2015 D4 MMi installation in D3

Well ... where oh where do i begin

This so far is one hell of an installation it far exceeds that of a simple 3G D3 system, this has stretched my capability beyond limits but now i can safly say that i am 85% there

So what are the differences then ... i can definitively say i know far more than i did a few weeks ago

As we all know the D3 is primarily 2G mmi both high and low prep
but from 2009 to 2010 the last production year of the D3 they introduced the 3G MMI system and 3G High prep ..

3G Plus as i discovered is often mistaken for the 3G High, 3G Plus is only available in the D4 and A6 from 2013 onward and other models like Q7 and A7 ect ..

To Install a 3G High system designed for the D3 is fairly easy in consists of several modules that are well know to work after component protection removal and a few hours of Coding ... many people offer this in the Uk Such as Hazzydaz starting at 4K ( Hope you have deep pockets)

Sour and disappointing that i would not be able to get the 3D Google earth and online services I set out on a mission, To learn how the D4 system differed and how it Spoke to the different modules on the car and if indeed the Language for the Data bus messages is different from that of the D3.

What I UN earthed was nothing short of Mount Everest in terms of challenge ahead of me ... the only items that spoke the "correct language" was the lane assist, high beam assist, and side assist.

This is where it gets complicated ... the work EEProm came into my life for the first time

I will not pretend to understand this Fully as i have had to pull favors from all walks of life to be able to get parts and components stripped down and chips removed from boards and EEPROM Files re Written and taught how to speak the D3 Language

So ..What is EEPROM?
EEPROM (pronounced e-prom) stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory and is a type of non-volatile memory used in MMI's motherboard to permanently store details. Normally the content of this memory can only be modified by Audi. Note that an EPROM is not the same thing although they sever the same function. Original EPROM's could only be altered after being erased and re written using ultraviolet light if they chip was made with that ability.
What EEPROM is on MMI unit?
The chip is manufactured by Atmel specifically for Automotive industry as a 2-Wire EEPROM. It has a capacity of 64Kb.
The full part number is AT24C64A-10TQ-2.7 but it's labeled as Q3, A, AT64A.

The EEPROM in MMI only uses 8192 bytes of the chip, when opening the content with Hex-editor such as XVI32 it looks like this:

This Little Guy is what you use to read and re flash the EEPROM

EEPROM Some known content:
The EEPROM in MMI only uses 8192 bytes of the chip, when opening the content with Hex-editor such as XVI32 it looks like this:

the New 5F unit in this case is a Duel Boot system made by harman and Becker for the Q7 A8 A7 And A6 and A5 and of course speaks the language of all the newer cars ... But not the D3 ...

The above is the European EEprom data including the elusive "Component Protection"

So what dose this all look like ?

This is the 3G MMI from the D3 this is the High Version with Joystick and The more advanced Satnav " Not Google Earth"

And this is the Q7 system 3G plus "eventually will be changed to display the D4 with W12 start up screen"

PS No idea if the Videos will show up ...

Will update as i Go on ..

Nice work Guy

Do you have the binary dump from the Atmel? I wouldn't mind taking a look at it in IDA

3G plus is very cool. I've often wondered how compatible the 3G and 3G plus components were.....

When I sold my A7 the two main things I missed were the wifi hotspot / data connection and the full postcode sat nav.....

I've heard the full post code can be persuaded onto a 3G system, but it wasn't perfect so I looked no further....

It would be quite some achievement if you prove a 3G+ will work in a D3 chassis.....

+1 from me Guy.
Hell of a problem for you to tackle but as I said earlier when we spoke about this, what a feeling if you manage it.
Sounds like you have found a decent support person.
I believe that there are a few people on this forum that would be quite interested in the electronics and software involved.
Keep on astounding us, please.

Excellent thread!

What a huge undertaking. The speed of the system makes the 2G look glacial. Is the data connection and Google Earth side of things acheivable?

I will do a full video and post to YouTube so that it can be seen better ....

So far I can confirm. ... Google earth is a go it truly feels like driving a new car now I'm so pleased with it.

I will update very soon.. I am awaiting 1 more key component and ill make up a new section of loom and we should be cooking on Gas..

I must admit this has drawn some massive attention from most competitors offering 3G instalation and although I'll be happy to show every one and discuss how it all works .. The secrets of the full integration I will happily pass on verbally to others at A8 meets but will keeping one thing a close secret as I seem to be getting lots of calls from companies such as vag tech and hazzydaz who were slightly unhelpful in early stages but are now showing an unhealthy interest in wanting to know the true workings of how I've managed to get it working ....

Again at the next meet I will come along and your all welcome to have a play with it and if anyone wants to undertake this then I will happily assist .. but let me iron out the 3 or 4 wrinkles I'm not happy with
