Well I managed with some patience to get the changer out, it does not fit in the other side at all. Over in bay 2 the changer is sticking out more than 1/2 inch, so bay 1 is definitely deeper.
The reason the changer was stuck, one of the release tabs on the changer is damaged so the release tool does not engage properly. Took me ages to wiggle it free from just one side, but got there. I've also left the changer now sticking out by a few mm so it lines up with the AMI and I can get it out again easily. I tried to correct the tab but its still not right. I've confirmed bay 2 is not deep enough, I applied some tape to the back of the AMI and pressed it in. The tape sticks to the back of the bay, so the AMI is as far back as it will go.
